Thanks Linton, one quick question - does this version handle investment accounts and reports. I thought the UK version was the basic package whilst the sunset version was the fuller product, may be wrong about that though as I am still using MS Money 2000 along with Morningstar :-)

No - the UK version fully supports investment accounts and has a wide range of investment reports. I am not really familiar with the US version, but believe the differences are where you would expect - spelling and US specifics such as tax support. The US version may have provided better support for on-line banking through Money which never really happened in this country.

I started with UK Money 2000 and as far as I remember the subsequent versions were largely cosmetic changes and bug fixes.

The next link details how to use MSMoneyQuotes to update prices from an FT.com portfolio export:
    http://gaiersoftware.com/Money/FTQuotes

This works better than the HLEquotes method that some of us may have used previously. It has a minor problem extracting the symbols for Vanguard and iShares ETFs.

I am still using HLEquotes which I find perfectly adequate for updating prices, apart from prices in Euros which are a bit of a hassle. What is the advantage of MoneyFTQuotes? Does it use the same strategy of loading the investments into a dummy account or does it go into Money more directly?

A major benefit is that it doesn't use a dummy account and doesn't leave your graphs covered with "bought" blobs.

It's still available on free trial.

There's a brand new version of this software just been released that uses new price lookups that should be supported into the future.

    https://gaiersoftware.com/Money

I've just downloaded and it gets more quotes than the previous version. The notes from the developer are below:

I wanted to let you know I have released version 2.0 tonight!

This version switches to an entirely new online quote service. The new quote service was built for the new MSN.com and MSN Money websites, and is also used by the Windows 8 Finance app. The new online quote service is more reliable, has better symbol coverage, and should be here to stay for a long time. It is backed by a Morningstar quote feed.

The MSN Money team has communicated to me the “old” quote service will be shutdown Jan 5th. It seems they pushed the date back from the originally planned date of Dec 22nd 2014. Good for us because it gave me more time to update my program!

As discussed in my previous email, this change required a significant amount of re-work to MSMoneyQuotes due to the new “symbology” format. And thus I changed MSMoneyQuotes’s major version from “1” to “2”.
The approach my program uses to access online quotes has changed. Instead of a single step to get online quotes using the symbols as-is from the Money file, there are now two steps:
    1) The first step is to “resolve symbols”. That means my program needs to map the symbols in your Money file (e.g. $US:INDU) to a symbol on MSN Money (e.g. 126.10.!DJI.126.$INDU). It uses the same service used by MSN Money’s “Quote Search” auto-complete input box to perform the lookup. See the “Help and Support” section at the bottom of this page for more information: http://gaiersoftware.com/Money/DetailsAndHelp

    2) If it can resolve the symbol, then it uses the special MSN Money symbols (e.g. 126.10.!DJI.126.$INDU) to fetch online quotes.

You can see the two steps above in action if you use the –v verbose option.

I have also fixed a couple problems reported to me with regards to the FT.com import feature. Specifically my program now handles symbols that have a double suffix (e.g. SLXX:LSE:GBP, IGUS:LSE:GBX) and symbols that are 2 characters long with a suffix (e.g. AI:PAR, OR:PAR).

And lastly, as part of the above online quotes re-work, I have begun the effort to include currency exchange rates as part of the online quote update. Look for that soon in version 2.1. If you are interested in the feature, I’ll be looking for some beta testers in the near future. Send me an email if you’re interested in participating in the testing.

I can confirm Rel 2 works very well, both for quotes from MSN and for prices downloaded from FT.com.

Yes I've found the same. Far better than the previous version. I've not yet used FT.com option, just the price codes in MS Money that I looked up on HL.

The only share I've not found to work yet is Eurotunnel but that's listed in Paris not London so it may be different coding.

Well done to the developer, a fantastic tool they've produced that will extend MS Money significantly for me at least.

  • I've just updated to version 2. It works a treat. Downloads prices for UK, US, Canadian, Irish, and European shares.

The updating problem appears to be something to with MSN quotes having two entries for certain stocks with the first entry being null data and the second one having the right share price. Unfortunately the Gaiersoft programming is pulling in the first one. If you look on MSN Quotes for say BT.A you can see the two entries - if you then look at the actual URL (in the address bar) when you go to these quotes you will see that there are differences (main issue being one resolves to 151 the other to 152). It needs MSN to sort it out. I have noticed some of my shares are gradually getting corrected and are now pulling in OK but others are still not sorted. It has been flagged to both MSN by various people and to Gaiersoft.

    Thanks Shed,
I had noticed the two MSN quotes having two entries with the first not working.
Some of my shares (that I corrected manually) have been corrected online for 22/05 (today 26/05) so will wait a while and hopefully it will gradually correct itself.
