My Food diary - Suggest me a substitute

  • Simple things to cook - some suggestions that work for me :)

Roast a chicken on Sunday, I'll still be eating mine on Wednesday.
Then you just need to cook some veg to have with it, (baked potato, stir fry veg in fajita spice and have in a wrap, etc)

Ratatouille - aubergine/courgette/onion/mushrooms/ whatever else is available cooked with tinned tomatoes/passata. I usually add a handful of red lentils. Could have with pasta, crusty bread, wrapped in tortilla and baked for kind of vegetarian enchilada

Frittata - big omelette with veg/potatoes in it. Serve with salad. Slices are good cold the following day.

Mostly what I cook ends up being more than one portion, which then ends up being lunch/dinner following day in a slightly different form. Greek yoghurt and fruit is pudding-y. Try baking fairy cakes and freezing (not ideal, but homemade is likely to be smaller portion/ can be made wholemeal, can chuck in handful of fruit)
For me focusing on eating well and being more aware of nutritional value is more sustainable than a dramatically cut calorie count. I am aware it takes longer, but I didn't end up here overnight.

Sugar, sugar, sugar! It's the sugar which is bad for you. We've all been misled by low fat' this and that, but low fat means sugar will have been added.

I've no idea what wasabi peas may be.

Guess you didn't want to horizon sugar v fat then?

The high fat guy almost ended yo type one diabetic, he also couldn't function physically and mentally, he lost more muscle than fat

Something quick and tasty to eat:

Bacon & Onion Foil Packet Potatoes

    2 to 3 sheets of heavy-duty foil
    1 packet onion soup powder
10-12 baby red potatoes, thinly sliced
12 slices of cooked and crumbled bacon
1 small onion thinly sliced and diced
    1 cup cheese (optional)
    Salt and pepper to taste
    3 tablespoons butter
    Sour cream for serving (optional)

Spray each sheet of foil with cooking spray. Top each piece with equal portions of potatoes, bacon, 1 packet onion soup powder and mix. Add salt and pepper to taste. Add 1 tablespoon of butter to each serving. Wrap securely.

Grill for 20 to 30 minutes. Or you can bake it in the oven, at 350° for about 35 minutes or till done. Let stand 10 minutes before serving. Serve in foil, topped with sour cream if desired

I've just lost a stone in a month. My diet was very snacky like yours with hardly any meals.
I've upped my exercise and lowered carbs. I don't calorie count but eat things like natural yogurt ( low fat ) not sure after reading this if it should be regular though, cottage cheese with Ryvita, hm curry based on tinned toms with added veg and spices, fruit, veg, eggs. Like you I don't eat much meat. I also like fruit smoothies made with milk as a treat.
I'm 5ft10 and now weigh 9st11. Hope this helps you. Good luck
Cherish those you have in your life because you never know when they won't be there anymore.

    Hi inky pinky

I have to say I was surprised at how much food you get through. I wonder if it would help you to see a food diary from someone who isn't overweight? Just to get an idea of the relative difference? Do tell me to b*gger off if it isn't helpful.

    So far today -

Breakfast - a mug of tea with semi-skimmed milk and one spoonful of unrefined sugar, and one slice of granary toast with real butter.

Mid-morning - a mug of black coffee with one spoonful of unrefined sugar and two ginger nut biscuits. I sometimes have fruit, but today it was bikkies.

Lunch - scrambled egg (2 medium eggs on two slices of granary bread spread with real butter) and a mug of tea as above.

Dinner - one of my special giant salads - some cold beef left over from Sunday lunch, tomatoes, lettuce, spring onions, green pepper, cucumber, a good tablespoon of potato salad, a good tablespoon of wholemeal pasta with pesto, some pickled onions. Pudding - full fat yogurt. Mug of coffee with a spoonful of unrefined sugar.

Before bed we'll probably have another mug of tea and either a couple of chocolate biscuits, or a 2-finger KitKat, or some cheese and biscuits, and some fruit.

You need to eat less, yes - but you know that, and me saying it isn't going to help.

But I would say you also need to change the type of things you eat. Swop all your white sugar, white flour etc for the unrefined equivalents - unrefined sugar (not just 'brown' - look for the stuff that has the word 'unrefined' on the packet), wholemeal flour, wholemeal pasta, brown rice. The refined stuff is just calories, with very little nutritional value.

Don't eat anything that calls itself 'Low Fat' 'Diet' or 'Lite' - it isn't real food, it's far too highly processed, and you'd be much better off eating the real thing. And don't drink any fizzy pop. None - not even the low calorie or zero varieties. Really. If you really can't live without a bit of fizz, drink sparkling mineral water.

    Good luck.

Ask yourself, will cutting everything out work for you?
