There were a lot of issues with the benefits system and some of those have been resolved. This scheme on the other hand is just a gimmick - if people are long term unemployed there is a reason for it and making them go to the job centre every day isn't going to resolve it.
This horrendous stereotype that people on JSA have no interest in getting a job is absolutely hideous. Most people are honest men and women who want to get a job like there's no tomorrow. They shouldn't be made to jump through hoops to get benefits - benefits to which they have highly likely contributed huge amounts to via National Insurance Contributions.
Being jobless is not a crime despite the whispering campaign.
Well said.
Those who are "sponging" off the state and have no interest getting a job won't change their ways by being forced to go to the job centre everyday.
Personally I think this exercise is counter-productive. I have never been on JSA so have no experience of the system but if I lost my job tomorrow and had to claim I'd be applying for jobs all day, every day. A couple of hours round trip to the job centre would eat into my valuable job-seeking time.0 -

Absolutely and it's a major problem for rural claimants. Seeing as private mileage can't be claimed, you can be forced onto buses that can take upwards of an hour. I can't really think of a bigger waste of time...Sealed Pot Challenge #239

Well if I was made to do this, it would be a waste of time that I would otherwise be spending job seeking/doing something worthwhile as opposed to sitting on the bus for hours.Sealed Pot Challenge #239

I think the money wasted (yes, it is a waste IMO) on staffing JC with useless "advisers" only to be able to tick people having to sign on every day - this money would be better spent on employing better advisers or training them to do their job better to actually be able to ADVISE.
I had a short spell of JS some time ago and mind boggles how most of "advisers" got/keep their jobs as NONE was able to advise me on anything at all.
Re people living of someone's taxes - wake up. Some of those people paid more taxes in say 10 years then you will working all your life and surely have every right to help if they temporarily fall on hard times.
I went from 43k per year for many years to JSA for about a year and then up again to double my pre-JSA salary now.
Why was I on JS for a year?
Simple - I would NOT take any crap job for NMW or Zero hours contract as this would block me from getting back to where I was.
I also did not feel I should have been "doing something" to get mine 65 per week or whatever it was at the time as I have done years and years of work and paying massive taxes before that.
Now - all above applies to unemployed professionals.
Please do not confuse with professionally unemployed.0 -
You don't get travel costs for your fortnightly sign on, but additional signings on get paid expenses.
Ironically this means the scheme is costing the tax payer more money. Also, there are not enough "work coaches" to see these people more often than not, so they are simply having their time wasted.
They just can't implement all these schemes properly anyway, more signing, checking people's more intensive & detailed job search etc.
It creates more work for them, doesn't help and stops people finding jobs.0 -
Legally you can only sign on once every fortnight for your benefits.
Any other sign-on in between this is classed as a mandatory JC visit and thus the claimant is entitled to a full refund of traveling costs.
Unfortunately they only pay for public transport costs and not mileage for driving.
Do people get a letter/appointment card at each daily signing for next day's signing ?0 -
They cant cope in JC's as it is.0

You're loaded!!
But yes, I agree completely.
I was on JSA about 3 years ago (i think?)
The advisers just look at your booklet (some didn't bother), then you sign your name and they shout out for the next person.
When I asked about training, nobody seemed to be able to help me at all. The only thing anyone could suggest when I mentioned 'courses' was a 'CV course'. I'd already had my CV done by a company. When it came to actual help to get a job, there was none. But then again, maybe that's not what they're there for?
Be better off 'signing on' online and saving mountains of money.0 -
if you have ever experienced the jobcentre ''doing more'' you will know you are better off if you are there as little as possible and straight in and out. when they do something with you, thats worse.0
