Bottom line is we should be making people who are on benefits do something to get those benefits rather than hand them to them on a plate.

Oh, you'll uppset the entitled people round here who get furious at having to do something for their money.

They've all got days jam packed full of interesting activities, you see, and shouldn't have to actually comply with any conditions for their free money...

so after years of working, you beleive your not entitled to any benefit for the short term.. you should be forced to do something to earn it.. even though paying thousands in tax should be sufficent?

No, and my posting didn't imply that. Read it again, more slowly, and try to understand it this time.

Your attotude to jobseekers generally stinks and is very stereotyped. Anyone educated and savvy about the situation will know daily signing is nothing more than a publicity stunt and will not get people into work.

The government need to get out there and fly the flag for Britain and create more jobs instead of putting unecessary pressure on claimants and staff.

So you thonls it right that someone who has held down a good job for years but finds themselves layed off through no fault of their own should be spoken down to by some civil servant who really isnt very civil at all, and probably not even as brainy as the claimant.

What's all this about becoming a recluse and getting out of the house?! lol

Most of my unemployed mates have much busier social lives than my working friends. Makes sense when you consider they're not stuck in an office. They're out enjoying the nice weather today for example.

(although in my case, I like being a recluse!)

As for the main issue at hand of signing on everyday, I think it's a bit daft really, but it doesn't effect me as i've not been on JSA for about 3 years/

We're talking about people who've been unemployed for 2 to 3 years. I don't think most people would feel they would want to languish on benefits forever. Something needs to be put into place to help such people.

The problem with this scheme is it won't work, not that it is unfair to expect things from the long term unemployed.

I reckon (us) tax payers have every right to be angry. Very angry that the government is wasting so much (of our hard earned tax) money on a job centre system that simply doesn't work .

The job of the job centre is to help people find work -not make it more difficult .

Do I think there should be sanctions- Yes I do - but fairly applied ones and not as part of a quota system .

Quite frankly some on the stupid remarks on this thread made me ashamed to be a tax payer if some of the posters claiming to be taxpayers on here are representative (which I don't believe they are- most tax payers are both better informed and better mannered !)

As a tax payer who's working 50 hours a week and struggling to get money together for a mortgage I certainly don't think it's a waste of time.

Bottom line is we should be making people who are on benefits do something to get those benefits rather than hand them to them on a plate.

That way the free loaders will soon realise it's more hassle to sponge off the state than it is to actually get a job.

I know you're just trolling, but they aren't being paid JSA for nothing. They're being paid JSA to help cover living costs while searching for a job which should be a full time activity.

Another problem with signing on daily is what if you have a job interview? From personal experience I know how inconvenient and disruptive it was on occasions when a job interview clashed with signing on. Having to contact the Jobcentre, explain the situation, get permission to sign on later and provide evidence. On one occasion the interview I had on a sign on day was met with great suspicion (partly because it was my third in six weeks, and also because I was going part-time work that day). It led to the threat of a sanction, or at least referral to a DM, until they backed down. It did still result in being referred to a set of advisor appointments - all for having a few job interviews.

Someone's who is signing on every day will have no "free" day to arrange interviews.

There's always the danger that, should an appointment get cancelled or rearranged due to an interview, there will be breakdown in communications which could potentially result in a sanction or referrel to a DM - especially with both the administrative incompetence often displayed by Jobcentre Plus, and their eagerness to sanction people.

No one is saying that the long-term unemployed shouldn't receive more support, and those who are unemployed for two or three years do need to do more than those unemployed for under six months (whether that's courses, training, voluntary work). But daily signing on is pointless and designed simply to further control the lives of long term unemployed and increase the possibility of sanctions.

You have pinpointed exactly why this scheme is needed - why are your unemployed 'mates' out in the sun today and not job seeking?

Daily signing days would be beneficial if they where used as check points. Reviewing what jobs they have applied for that day or what interviews they have been on/going to.
