What are the point in Job centres if they don't show you what jobs are available? Surely they must do this in some form or other? Even from these boards some people have said about applying for jobs at the job centre or face sanction ...??

I havn't been in one since just coming out of school...

Either way as above it gets you out the house ~ it gets the lazy people (not saying all job seekers are lazy !!) dressed out the house and ready to go...where as if they could just sit in the houses all day and get paid some people would.

Why are you posting about something you know nothing about ?
Job centres are very different places......The "advisors" who you see when you sign on do nothing to help you job hunt -their job remit is to ensure you have used the web to apply for enough jobs every week and if you haven't to set in motion sanctions to stop benefit-often incorrectly as a ridiculous number are overturned on appeal (something like 70%)
The days of getting help on a regular signing on appointment are a dim and distant memory (I was shocked too).

Anyway maybe before you are so darn rude to people in future you could educate yourself first please and perhaps you wouldn't seem so ignorant in future.

Right I'm off to work now - not all of us can spend all day reading the DM and posting y'know ! ;)

Er, all the jobs the jobcentre knows about are on universal jobsmatch which you can access from home but not from jobcentres.

The point of this is to flush out people working cash in hand.

Your not going to get any positive comments on here, end day your getting paid to not be at work.

So yes you should be at the job centre checking everyday.

Yes they are, its nothing more than punishment and pr3ssure making people sign every day and pointless totally pointless.

Well, it gets them out of the house, gets them a bit of exercise, and makes sure that they aren't at risk of being a recluse, so it can't be a total waste of time.

So you assuming that jobseekers dont get out the house then, they all sit in front of the box all day, dear me!,,,

There are electronic job points in most jobcentres, but all vacancies can be accessed be people at home using Universal Jobmatch anyway. Also forcing people to come in for daily signing doesn't force them to use the job points.

Traditionally when you sign on the member of staff would spend a couple of minutes doing a quick job search and print off the details of any suitable jobs. However, as claimant counts increased, staff time became limited, and the Jobcentre has increasingly become a sanctioning arm for the Co-alition government, this is rarely the case. Now an appointment typically consists of a check of your idenity, quick look at job search evidence, and sign. If the member of staff is suspicious/has a doubt/feels the claimant needs more support they can arrange an appointment with an advisor by the vast majority of claimants are usually sent on their way as quickly as possible.

Some people, especially those long-term unemployed, can be sent for intensive job searches. This is where they come in perhaps once a week or once a fortnight and sit with an advisor while they do an intensive jobsearch. But I doubt there will be time to do such a thing with daily sign ons, not when this isn't possible now we only have fortnightly or weekly sign ons for the majority.

If you dont have a job, what else are you doing during the day? [/B]A trip to the jobcentre will get you out instead of sitting in the dark you mushroom.

Search for and apply for jobs? Attend training and courses? Do voluntary work?

Travelling to and from, plus sitting in, a Jobcentre to sign on can easily waste 2 hours plus of a day - valuable job searching time.

It's a waste of time and I gather the staff think so too

As a tax payer who's working 50 hours a week and struggling to get money together for a mortgage I certainly don't think it's a waste of time.

Bottom line is we should be making people who are on benefits do something to get those benefits rather than hand them to them on a plate.

That way the free loaders will soon realise it's more hassle to sponge off the state than it is to actually get a job.

since being a tax payer and working is vital to having an opinion in this thread, can i just say i am a full time worker, sometimes more than 50 hours a week sometimes 37.. and therefor pay tax can i just say..

this is a complete and utter waste of time and money.

lets relate this to work in some way..
your very busy trying to get things done, to complete your task but you are needed in a different city for a 30 minute meeting, you have to pay 100 quid on the train spend 90 mins getting there, spend 30 mins in a pointless meeting and then 90 mins getting back.

your 100 out of pocket and 3 hours wasted.. you would complain and whinge and say its pointless...

sending people daily is a sign of mistrust, and it is a form of punishment. 70 quid a week barely covers your surplus bills let alone daily travel to a job centre.

remember - only around 1-3% of JSA claimants are misusing the system.

the vast majority dont want to be on JSA and are trying to get back in work.

some peoples opinions are plain ignorant and rude

also.. making people do something to get benefits?

i think having worked for so long and paying so much tax like most of them have done.. they are entitled to the measly pathetic amount of benefit they get!!

No, and my posting didn't imply that. Read it again, more slowly, and try to understand it this time.
