Rough area? Not exactly. Depends where you pick - Monton is not rough and has excellent transport connections. Huge misconception of people outside Greater Manchester who base their views on the news from 1998.

I live in Salford btw! I know what it's like.

I grew up around Chester, and have lived in South Manchester, and South Warrington. The whole Salford/Eccles area is a bit of a hole.

    No harm, no foul. ;)

It's interesting to exchange views on the NW, esp for me who is looking to buy first house soon :)

Where are you thinking of buying? Our first priority was undoubtedly schools so that really helped narrow it down.

Stockport - mostly for the schools - we have 1 baby on the way.

But looking around at some of the bargains in slightly less nice areas, it's a puzzle. When you have a variation in £40k between areas (Eccles at £100k- £110k, Stockport at £150k) for similar type properties AND you are thinking about stamp duty implications (and money saved for maternity)

    All a juggling act!
  • Not sure why it hasn't been mentioned before; why not Liverpool?!!! It has some great areas such as Aigburth, Allerton,Woolton,Calderdtones, Crosby, Childwall, West Derby the list goes on. There are some very good schools in Liverpool not to mention the brilliant and varied shopping and the number of museums, galleries and theatres. Liverpool has some great parks and beaches and has some of the lowest crime figures in the north west and not to mention friendly and smiley locals.
