I'm shocked no one has suggested Greater Manchester yet. If you live near the M602 on the west side (Salford/Eccles) then it's a 30 minutes drive into the centre of Liverpool with no traffic (M602/M62), or there's a pretty cheap, pretty regular train service.

There's generally not loads of traffic going from Manchester-Liverpool in the morning, it's a commute I do quite often at 7:30am and I get stuck in traffic maybe 1 in 10 times

Prices are decent, lots of good victorian housing stock with big gardens, 4/5/6 bedrooms for around £350k+ in a nice area.

Shame it's a pretty rough area compared to the rest of the places mentioned though!

Chester is great as well. Fast turnaround on empty shop units. Loads of new bars and restaurants. Unemployment lower than the north west average by some distance. It will be 45 minutes on the train to Liverpool but there are 4 an hour. Parts of Chester are quite expensive but loads of places reasonably priced. Can't see Helsby being much cheaper either to be honest.

Rough area? Not exactly. Depends where you pick - Monton is not rough and has excellent transport connections. Huge misconception of people outside Greater Manchester who base their views on the news from 1998.
  • I commute from Stockport to Warrington. The traffic (M62, M6, M56) is very bad when the weather is bad - two or three accidents and the network grinds to a halt. Stockport is lovely tho, all the amenities, amazing schools. Prob a bit far to commute to Liverpool tho.
  • I don't really know Helsby, but I think Culcheth would be a great choice. Nice little place, fairly isolated from anywhere else but still with it's own shops, restaurants etc. Crime is pretty low as well.

I do think areas of Greater Manchester could be a really sensible move as well. Stockport in the south is nice, parts of Salford to the west (Monton, Worsley, Swinton) and parts of Bury to the north (Prestwich, Whitefield).

Eccles has its good and bad parts, like most other places.

Ellesmere Park being one of the better parts, for example.

yep, Ellesmere Park is one of the nicest areas in Manchester where you're a 10 min drive from Manchester centre and a 35 min drive from Liverpool centre, although house prices do seem to reflect this!

If I had to commute to Liverpool though, I'd want to avoid the M60/M56 as much as possible at rush hour, hence the suggestion of various areas in Salford

Aye, I used to do Albert Road to Exchange Street East, L2 every day back in the late 80s.

I'm pretty sure it took my 1.2 Astra Merit more than 35 minutes though.
