I'm afraid I just looked this up and there are about half a dozen Catholic feeder schools. The first one I looked at said they needed to be baptised, which they're not

Believe me, my son hasn't been christened and he doesn't go to church but he is doing very well at this school even though his primary school wasn't a catholic school.

Which primary did he go to? The feeder schools are all Catholic so if it is over subscribed (which in eight years might well be!), they won't stand a chance. Where I live currently, has some brilliant grammar schools and we are out of catchment for the good comps so if we are making this big move, I want to be as certain as I can at this stage that we have done all we can to guarantee a decent school.

Any thoughts about Standish near Wigan? There is an excellent high school and you get a little more for your money.

I lived in Standish for many years and it is lovely BUT I moved last summer as I got a job in Liverpool. I found the commute dreadful, as did my husband. Personally, I wouldn't choose Standish if I needed to be close to Liverpool, but that's just me!

We moved back to the Wirral and it's perfect for us; good transport links, great schools, beaches etc.

We lived in Nantwich for 8 years, which is lovely. However, we have now moved to North Wales, a little south of Wrexham. Probably too far for a commute to Liverpool, but have you looked at Port Sunlight? Always looks lovely when we drive through

Standish is a lovely place to live with a villagey feel. We have family who live there and they commute to Liverpool without a problem. The high school is excellent too and close to the centre of the village.

Personally I wouldn't want to commute from Standish to Liverpool, but it really depends wherabouts in Liverpool you're going to. I commute to Manchester and Warrington and the m6 makes me want to scream

My Dad commuted Southport to Liverpool for 20+ years as the train is every 15 mins and reasonably priced. I think Southport is great for families, but a pain to commute to anywhere other than Liverpool!

Another vote for Ormskirk here, particularly around Aughton which has good primary schools and train links to Liverpool.

I've got friends in the area who previously lived on the Wirral and they love it in Ormskirk.

Thanks, Ormskirk is on the list too! I'm trying to consider all options and draw up a short list before dragging two young children up north to find somewhere.
