Would you be commuting by car or train?0

New Brighton is nice if you like the beach, some areas are fantastic and then 2 mins away its dire. property is half the price of west Kirby and you can get a great view of Liverpool if you can buy on the promenade. They don't come on the market that often though 😞0

I'd take a really serious look at commuting times for anywhere you are considering buying a house. Going to a 'good' school is one component but having family time together is also very important. A long commute really eats into the period between the children getting back from school / nursery and bedtime.
When my husband and I decided to buy a house together, we put a commute under 30 minutes as a higher priority than the 'best' schools. We've never regretted this decision. In fact, the secondary school nearest us (which used to be the best in Manchester) was in special measures for a while, but is now back to good ofsted reports. I'm confident that our children will receive a good education there, alongside support from us.0 -
If he'll be travelling by train then the Merseyrail website will give him an idea of the journey times and train frequency.

I completely agree. There are a few options of where he could be based inc Birkenhead so I'm doing the research now so we can be quick to make decisions later. Will def consider train lines0 -
We decided to buy within the catchment of Great Sankey High in Warrington. I would have preferred a village but we figured it was silly to move close to my family and still be a hours drive away. Hubby will be working in St Helens so not unreasonable a commute.0

Lancaster is nice, M6 link and Western Railine, good schools, reasonable house prices and close to the lakes.0

I'm shocked no one has suggested Greater Manchester yet. If you live near the M602 on the west side (Salford/Eccles) then it's a 30 minutes drive into the centre of Liverpool with no traffic (M602/M62), or there's a pretty cheap, pretty regular train service.
There's generally not loads of traffic going from Manchester-Liverpool in the morning, it's a commute I do quite often at 7:30am and I get stuck in traffic maybe 1 in 10 times
Prices are decent, lots of good victorian housing stock with big gardens, 4/5/6 bedrooms for around £350k+ in a nice area.0
