:rotfl: You really are a true Scotsman.

Our fencing posts (and our farmer neighbour's) are just set into the earth - no concrete. From what I've read concrete will cause the wood to rot faster and you'll make life very difficult for yourself when you need to dig them up again. The job is labour intensive enough without messing about with concrete.

So how do you ram down the earth sufficiently after inserting the posts to ensure they're stable? We get very strong winds in our neck of the woods.

For a 7' fence pole dig a 2 1/2' hole about twice the diameter of the pole to give you a 5' fence. Dig a bit further and fill that part with gravel. Place the fence post in position and pour in gravel until there's a 1 1/2' hole. Level fence post and then compact earth around it using a tamping tool. It's hard work and will require two people but my wife and I have had our fence for several years without any trouble.

As for the fence itself I'd recommend building a simple post and rail fence with hardwood rather than buying the panels from a garden centre. Something like the crossed one on here would look nice and will last - http://www.davidnewtoninteractive.co.uk/sandalwood/post_&_rail.htm
If you're going to be keeping pets, you can buy mesh or if no pets, just treat the wood and leave as is. :)

We'll be building a fence, panels don't last well in the land of windy gardens :D

MFP is for calorie tracking, free to use.
