We looked further out today, but were very disappointed with the surrounding areas, looks like we will be sticking to what we know despite the high cost. Saw a lovely 3 bed semi in a lovely area today (fairly posh) and will give real thought to an offer.

7 viewings on our property, another 2 who say they intend to offer, taking us to 4 who have expressed a wish to bid.

  • Just thought I would pop in to say there are quite a few people on this thread that are now moving! There seems to be an epidemic!
Wow on all the viewings and possible offers, I hope it gives you enough time to find a new house.
If I ever move I might just rent for a few months haha and be a 'cash' buyer (yeah right in my dreams!)

Good luck with it all x

Trying to curb my enthusiasm, quite taken with wee house in posh quiet area.

Am imagining a super refurb that would make it DIY proof for the next 10 years. Current ideas on my wish list include: replace single garage with SIP garden room to maximise space in small garden; solar panels; replace rear patio; remove overly large conifer type hedge at side of property with nice fencing; new bathroom; skim of plaster over all textured surfaces; redecorate; new floor coverings.

Could probably afford to buy house and do all this now, although would definitely knacker our savings. Still, the thought of an energy efficient retrofit appeals :)
  • That sounds perfect ;)

I've had solar panels 6 months now and if you want them I'd do asap after moving as long a roof is good as there are whispering that they are going to stop FIT payments for new fittings on private residences next year.

Obviously this is all just whispering at the moment.

Jimlad will know more about this I expect if you ask him

I suppose my main concern would be the cost effectivness of panels over a shorter period (10 years). Not quite sure what happens when you sell a house with associated FITs (are they transferable etc.)?

Mrs E would also like an electric car (long felt want, we have absolutely no plans to buy any type of car for a couple of years). Panels on the roof + a bank on the roof of the SIP room would probably cover most of our use + car.

Would be like a vision of the not too distant future :rotfl:
  • Hi Ed!
Enjoying catching up on your thread this morning as we seem to be in a similar position!
Looking forward to seeing where you end up moving too!

  • When we upgrade next we are going from diesel to electric car.

I think we will go that in 3-5 years.

I'm sure the Fit transfers to next owner, I'm not planning on moving ever so I didn't look into it :)

The cost effectiveness over 10 years depends on the weather! They say mine will be paid for in 7 years. I spend total of £4800 if I remember right. I've had about £400 in fit payments in 6 months, my energy use has dropped dramatically as most of my hot water has been heated by solar all summer do very low oil use got last 3 months. My electricity per day has gone from 15 to 4 but it's summer so I'm not sure of actual drop yet but Jimlad thinks half previous amount. You need to try and factor all that in.
