I wish I was joking Tilly.

It has been framed as 'bringing me into the fold', but the curt manner in which the missive was delivered leaves me in no doubt of the intent.

I am not a stupid man and like to think that I can read between the lines. Sometimes I think that life would be much easier if I couldn't ;)

Mrs E knows of my decision, she supports me although it's less than ideal.
  • Sorry to hear that your job is pants :( but glad to hear that you have a job interview :)

:j to the interview and :( to work. I can't help with the presentation I'm afraid, though the fish tank sounds like it would be different to normal :)

    Here's to the weekend

  • I think the fish tank would work. Very good luck with the interview. They are awful things but soon over. The key is in the preparation and I am sure you would put the time in.

    All the very best,

Well done on the interview Ed, that's great news :j

I love the fish tank idea, as long as you build up the skills and experience they require for the job within your presentation.. At least your presentation will stick in the interviewers minds..you have nothing to lose and all to gain, GO FOR IT!!!:j

Here is to a quiet weekend and quality time with Mrs E

  • I love the fish tank idea, so different to the normal boring work issues.

Like people have said before - as long as you still get your 'worky' points across clearly, the fact that it will stick in their minds will only benefit you - and make them see you have a sense of humour! :D

Honestly Mr E what type of company do you work for  Tell me you're joking about moving desks

You'd like to think that was something unheard of but sadly I've seen this kind of thing before.

Years ago, I worked in a fairly large team where there was a particularly head strong developer who was friends with the boss. A fairly new developer disagreed with him over best coding practice and was put on the 'naughty step' too. It started with him being put on patronising projects, then his internet access was revoked (yes..... his internet access was revoked...) then he was moved downstairs to sit with myself and my support team as 'he was doing support developement projects' but they were just trying to alienate him. He handed in his notice and they offered to let him go there and then

It was horrible to realise what was going on, and the team lost a lot of people over that as they were disgusted about what happened and didn't want to work with people like that. I was one of the ones who chose to move on too

Vibes like that can ripple through a team - you tend to lose the good natured people when stuff like that happens as they don't like to see what can happen to others

I think the fish tank idea would work very well.

Everyone else will be doing boring, worthy presentations, so it helps to stand out a bit. In the dim and distant past, I was sent on three day assessment for my suitability for management. We all had to do a presentation, and I did mine on soap operas! It worked out well, as I got a managerial role a month later. ( the fact that I hated it, and relinquished the role a couple of years later is another story!)

Your current situation sounds intolerable -I hope you are successful in your job search

I love the idea and when interviewing its nice to see humour and a little insight into the candidates personality.

Sorry to hear about the desk, that's shocking.

    Mr E

I woke to a text from 2 thousand miles away referring to your thread!!!

    Can I offer four observations:

    1. You are instantly recognisable to anyone at your work. Be careful

    2. Don't resign without getting the satisfaction of seeing your boss' boss' boss (accepted, apparently, your unreserved apology for you missing the meeting). Tell him/ her where you see it going wrong and what needs to be done differently. Impersonalise your views (you won't be able to do this easily). You will get three things from this - your asked to leave; a new direction within the organisation; the satisfaction of refusing to move desks (please tell us this person is not part of this episode)

I think the term which includes sheep and lamb comes to mind!!

    3. I read your fish tank question as rhetorical which implies you might not have the confidence to pull it off. Yes it might be amusing and if you can tie it into how you would approach your new job it might work. My word of caution is about your audience - who, in their right mind, asks someone to do a SEVEN minute presentation. One of your audience is anal.

    4. Sort of relates to 1 above and I think you know is meant with good intent - be careful about going on this forum during work hours

Mr E (mystery, hee hee) - I know you will treat all advice with caution but please only do what YOU are comfortable with. Only consider point 2, in your current mood, if you are serious about handing in your notice. Not saying you should not do it at some point anyway because, as you portray it, your work environment needs a shake. I did something similar many, many years ago - best thing I ever did (but I had a feeling I was going to have a receptive listener and I had good "change" ideas).

    Good luck
