I can understand why drivers cut up middle lane hoggers, to teach them to drive in the correct lane, but it is a dangerous practice.

I try and "educate" middle lane hoggers by using the "orbiting" manoeuvre. But I don't cut them up... i leave at least 2 car-lengths before pulling back into lane 1.

It is good to know that BMW are fitting indicators to their cars at long last.
I used to think that good grammar is important, but now I know that good wine is importanter.

To55ers do this constantly on the anti clockwise m25 approaching M3 take the east bound and cut into the west bound lane at last second. They never slot into the space behind you. People seem to think they have some devine right to get somewhere before you.

Your cruise control is your problem though.

Probably inexperienced drivers. Decent ones will have left you 18 inches gap or less.

lol , The only time ive seen a 2 to 3 car gap is on a very very quiet day

I must watch the US cop shows too much. Dont you just want to test the pit manouvre on middle lane hoggers and insurance fraudsters that use cruise when its not safe.

An idiot had his exit 0.4 miles (ish). Decided to overtake on the overtaking lane, and then cut me up with just 2-3 car lengths and then do the same to a slow moving lorry in lane 1 and make his exit.

Maybe you should stop cruising along in the middle lane forcing people to go to the outside lane to overtake......

The middle lane and outside lane are both overtaking lanes

I'm sure I was taught and it is something I'm taught my children, which is not to move in until you see the car you have passed in the inside mirror. This ensures a reasonable gap when you move in.

I know what the OP means and it is too simplistic to say the over taking car is going fast so what's the problem. There should always be a safe stopping distance between you and the car in front. If a car cuts in front of you then good drivers will seek to restore the safe stopping distance. It's a natural reaction of good drivers. It's pretty inconsiderate of the overtaking driver to force the overtaken car to slow down but then any idiot who pulls in too soon probably thinks nothing about being right up behind the car in front anyway.

Also, in cases where a car overtakes then moves into to take an exit he may not keep a constant speed. It's likely he put his foot down to get round and having got in front he's now thinking about the exit and so has eased off a bit.

So was I, and I daresay I learnt much more recently than you. Both mirrors in fact, left and rear view. I always do this, even when some clown is in tailgating me. One of the, erm, few things I didn't stop doing immediately upon passing my test. :p

Oh dear another classic post started by london tiger.

If you panic to find the brake pedal (suggests you are not in control) you need some more lessons.

as others have said you shouldnt need to brake if they are going faster than you, if they do slow down, then disengaging the cruise control via the steering wheel is the best method with no need to touch the brake
