Get a clumping litter, life will be so much easier....

With a non clumping litter - pick up the poo and dispose of but not in the toilet unless you are a plumber?

Not much you can do about pee with non clumping litter..

I use clumping, pee clumps a ball which I can just pick up with a scoop leaving clean litter behind.

Have a look at Golden Grey - quite a few of us swear by it. I get 2 bags for under £20.00 and with 4 cats (yuup, got four and you will get there eventually too LOL) those 2 bags last me a month so £5 per cat per month. 2 bags would last you 4 months with just one cat.

    Golden Grey

I used Golden Grey for years, recently moved to Golden White

Not down the loo - scoop into a rubbish bag. We scoop, and completely change once a day. We use the Sainsburys Basics stuff; ours don't like Catsan or anything like that.

Thanks for the advice! Will definitely look at clumping litter next time then!

Hopefully Derek is becoming more used to the house; though he's certainly not becoming more used to us yet...

He'll have a bit more alone time this afternoon as me and my other half are both off to run the Manchester 10k... :-((

Oh and when you say put it in a rubbish bag, do you guys have a supply of small rubbish bags of some description? I assume you're not using an actual big bin liner for every number 2..?

I buy baby nappy sacs, the cheapest one, like pennies for 300 of them and scoop the deposits into those, tie them up and throw away.

Tesco/Asda do their own basic brand of those...

Asda's look like that - so you know what to look for, they are 35 pence for a pack of 300

If you do buy a laser pen - do not play much with Derek using this, can make cats crazy and not in a good/funny way. Cats like to chase things to catch them. Chasing something they can not catch is not that good for their mental state.

Better get him some feathered toy on a stick like "da bird" - much better for him and lots of fun for both of you.

If you want to splash out - cats like running water better than still in their bowls so perhaps this could come useful. I used to have one but now with a dog, not possible as would be running empty all the time:

In any case - keep water separate from food and litter box - cats seem to prefer their water away from their food and then both water and food far away from the litter tray

Oh, with Golden Grey and 4 cats (I have 2 litter trays for my 4 boys, they happily share) - I do a complete change only once every 2 weeks.

I open the bag, split it equally between 2 massive trays half bag in each, scoop every day (few times per day as it is 4 cats) and when it goes very low (2 weeks on the dot) - I throw away the left overs, wash the trays and put another bag in them half half and then again it lasts 2 weeks.

Clumping litter you have to fill in quite deep so it is better to have a decent size litter box. It needs to be deep enough for the clumps to be able to form. If it is not filled deep enough - clumps will stuck to the bottom of the tray.

Life is so much easier with clumping litter.
