Well I am posting this via SAMBA Mobile so it doesn't seem closed yet for existing credit.

I am still using my old Vodafone K3565 dongle from many years ago for broadband on the move.

It came with no time limits, keep account alive by using every 6 months, but £15 top up gives 1GB data. Still on my second top up (about £14 left) certainly had it for 6 years or so.

If you can find an old one of these, with the original old sim it may do the trick.

The new ones have time limits 30 days etc.

I have to keep installing the software on my W8 PC as it is no longer supported on this system but as I use it infrequently this is not a big problem.
I started with nothing and I am proud to say I still have most of it left.
  • It seems that someone is missing an opportunity. What most of us want is a non expiring data sim. I would happily pay say £25 for 500Mb if I knew it wouldn't expire. Like most I only use it very rarely in my iPads when I can't get a wi-fi signal. Surely one of the operators can see they could make money out of this.

Will people never learn, the something for nothing model never lasts long....

Every single one of them that has tried has shut up shop

my paid alternative is giff gaff pay as you go 3gb data for £12.50, its the best deal out there.

I disagree about it being 'something for nothing'

Firstly, you have a pay a few pounds to join - the sims were not free and you had a pay a hefty £2.50 P&P charge on them. You also needed to buy a dongle if you didn't already have one.

Secondly, the number of adverts were limited and if you needed more credit then you had to top up using cash.

Thirdly, the amount of credit per ad view was minimal. 3 Mobile charge £10 for 1GB of data and Samba gave you 3.5MB per ad view so you got 3.4p worth of data for every ad you viewed.

Have you heard of Freeview television channels? Apart from the BBC ones they work on the basis that the adverts pay for the channel, so why couldn't mobile Internet work on the same basis?

Seems the "free data" idea won't work. Now looking out for some other provider for my tablet data sim. All the ones that run out after 30days are not good as I am a very low user of data. Only needing it when no WiFi coverage. PAYG with 3 maybe the way on their 3-2-1 sim. I could afford 1p per meg on the little use I give it.

With 3 2 1, you also get 150Mb free each time you top up. So if you top up £5 every two months say (=£2.50 per month), then data is free the first month (up to 150MB) and 1p per MB the second month.

AFAIK Three 3 2 1 only works in phones but you can tether the tablet to the phone.
