Thanks for the warm welcome fmess, apple-muncher, tori.k, eyebright and Dolly84.
Also, have seen some good tips from you all here already, thanks.
So a little bit about me - I'm a 46 year old serial dieter and have been since my twenties, have lost well twice, once with WW then with SW, but always regained plus some. Second stint with SW not so successful, only lost about half a stone which seemed to take forever, before I lost interest.
Now at my heaviest again (was last this weight after birth of DS2), I'm 12st 11lb this morning which puts me well and truly in the overweight category at 5'7", although don't have too much faith in the science of BMI charts.
Harder to ignore is my waist measurement, which at 37.5 in (even worse when I see it in black and white!!) is at least 4 inches too much to be healthy.
After a lot of reading and attempts at a lot of diets over the past couple of years, I've come to the same sort of conclusion as several of you that quitting sugar is the way to go. I've tried that as a standalone and gave up after four weeks as no weight loss and pretty bored with the (self-inflicted) limits, also had really bad stomach pains after eating, particularly wholemeal bread, but as this had turned into a big part of my diet I'm not surprised.
Have also tried 5:2 and again failed to lose weight, but know that is because I did absolutely no modification to my eating - and wine drinking - on the five days I wasn't fasting.
Have come to the same conclusion as VJsmum about what I need to do, so plan to restart 5:2 with little or no sugar and no grains, if I can. I'm one week into Judith Beck's 6 week CBT course so will be starting in earnest next Tuesday with this plan, but I need to get all my ducks in a row and make sure that I'm well prepared this time.
I have also come to the conclusion that I need the support of others in the same boat, and also the discipline of regular reporting / weigh ins, which is where I'm sure this thread will be invaluable (and it's far more MSE than handing over £££ to WW or SW every week!!)
I also completed the Couch to 5K at the end of last year, and loved running, but that's gone by the wayside since I broke my big toe in the summer - kids school holidays also provided a perfect get-out clause for me too.... I loved running though (okay, it was jogging as I was never fast!) and also enjoy cycling so both plus weight training and/or Jillian Michaels' 30 day Shred will be part of my big plan. Have never lost weight with any of these, but all have did wonders for firming up this ageing body.
Phew, sorry for big post. First mini weight loss goal will be to lose 5lb by the end of October.#21 Save £12k in 2025 £12577.35/£20000

I weighed in yesterday and was 14.2 so that's 1lb gone. I've been veering between 13.11 and 14.3 for about 6 months so I need to get below this before I can really claim to be making progress. As I said I want to lose a stone before Christmas. 13lb to go...
VJsmum - the eating plan you set out is really where I want to be. I've read Gary Taubes and a few other sugar books and am sure low carb is the way to go - but it's not easy! It doesn't always fit well into family meals and it can be expensive. I usually have porridge for breakfast and this saves a few £. Not sure what to have on it now though - nothing probably!
Apart from walking every day I have done no exercise yet and this is what has got to change. Need to go swimming for a start...tomorrow. I usually find that when the exercise falls into place the eating follows.August Shopping Challenge. 26/8. Budget £250 Spent £256.81.. £6.81 over. So £0.00 a day left.0 -

Morning everyone
Been awol for a while because I am having problems with this darned achilles tendon. Its so frustrating because my heart and head want to be out there running every day but my body is saying no.
The hard truth is that I could pay a fortune for private treatment but there is not guarantee that I will be any better off. The other option is to not overdo it, do a mix of different types of exercise and rest it when it really starts to play up.
Oh and wearing sensible shoes when I am not running or exercising is really important too I am told.
Did a 10 mile bike ride last night and it was great. If I press on my achilles it does feel a little tender but I am pleased its no worse.
So I am back with you, but slower than before sadly.:(0 -
Morning. Glorious weather here again today, dropped the kids at school early for DS's piano lesson and was back and out on my bike by 8.40 am, I did my favourite massive hill and 10 miles in total and was back home at 9.20 am, very pleased with that time.
I had overnight oats for breakfast today and yesterday, yesterday was the first time and I had them with nutella and a banana. Today I had almond butter, sultanas and cinnamon apple. I don't think a protein breakfast would get me up a hill on a bike, I definitely thrive on carbs. When I got back from the bike ride I had 1/2 a cinnamon raisin bagel and a coffee. Not sure what I will be eating for the rest of the day but tea will involve sausages, oh I have just remembered I have left over chilli in the fridge so that will be lunch.Debt Free and now a saver, conscious consumer, low waste lifestyler
