I've had whinges like this lately. I do think that FB is a peeing contest at times to show off. One friend on there posts nothing other than her kids and I know people love their kids but I don't want to see pictures of hers every single day, sometimes multiple times a day so I unfollowed her. Then there's the friends who post cryptic messages so people ask what's up but never get an answer. And what gets me goat even more is people with their kids in their friends list but think nothing wrong with posting half naked pictures of themselves tanked up at some venue or other and posting incoherant drunk messages. Ahh I hate Facebook most of the time. I'm trying really hard to not keep checking my phone as my daughter makes remarks that I'm always on it so what message am I sending her?

I must be a grumpy old git too :-)

You're not alone in thinking this. I'm getting pretty sick of spending evenings with friends just to have them staring at their phone the whole time. It's rude and makes me feel a little sad.

Also Facebook just seems to encourage vanity, so many selfies! And so many status updates from people on holiday! You're on holiday! Go and actually be on holiday instead of on facebook!

I do agree about 'selfies'. My cousin's wife in California, who I love and have lots of respect for in many ways, is dreadful for this. I'm stuck in traffic - here's a selfie! I have had a bad day - here's a selfie of me looking sad! I have a new hairband - selfie! Etc. It is so weird because in person she is the least vain person ever, wears no make up ( though she doesn't need it, being naturally stunning), never looks in mirrors, etc. So odd - I just don't get it.

To be fair, she is pretty much the only person on my friends list who does selfies, and she has many other good qualities that almost make me excuse it!

Last week my son told me of one of his friends who put on FB she was now 5cm dilated.

:eek::eek: Why oh why would you want the whole world to know that you are 5cm dilated?

I must say bailey that the whole facebook/twitter/checking your mobile constantly gets on my wick too. In my opinion it is just bad manners to stop mid conversation to check your phone and just expect others to wait for you to rejoin the land of the living!

I agree with you, and I don't really like Facebook as a rule, although it has its uses as daisiegg pointed out.

A friend of mine doesn't live locally and last time we had a txt 'conversation' I told her I'd recently adopted another rabbit, and she said "oh? I haven't seen any pics of him on FB" as if it was an expectation.

Most people will disagree, but I find it sad that people choose to announce huge life events to their friends (and sometimes even family) on facebook, such as engagements, pregnancies, births etc. It takes the same amount of time to send a group text message/email to your friends than it does to upload a baby scan photo. Just not for me.

I would deactivate my facebook account, unfortunately because every one of my friends uses it nowadays to update about every little thing, I would feel totally out of touch with them if I did this. Because people no longer pick up the phone and TALK to each other now, they don't need to, they know what the other person has been up to because of facebook.

I saw a lamebook/buzzfeed post recently where someone said "Do you remember before social media came in and we all took photos of our dinners and desserts, had them printed off, and went round all our friends' houses to show them what we ate? No? Me neither." :rotfl:
  • I mainly use FB to keep in touch with friends and family who live all over the country. However, one of them is constantly posting about how blessed she is, how much she loves her family, and puts those really irritating memes on her timeline too - grrr!

She's a lovely woman but I do wonder what on earth she's playing at because it comes across as very boastful.

Ok, after thinking getting over my indignation for a moment, I can agree it has its good points. There are a couple of old friends I'd probably never hear from if it wasn't for facebook.

But the level of sharing that happens on there is immense. Surely nobody wants to know as much about anyone as is posted on there?
especially the 5cm dilated thing xD I can't imagine anyone wanting to bother with facebook during such an occasion!

FB can be used so differently by different people, I don't recognise any of the above. Well, I know what sort of use it is because I have occasionally stumbled upon it. I use it to keep up to date with my various interests and friends who are more likely to post something of a political nature or something personal, but interesting.

It is also a great tool for support for special needs groups.

Having said that I hate the way it is all in the here and now. If I send an email it stays there in my sent box so I can refer back to it, my emails are searchable if I want to look for something. Unless I'm missing something, this is not possible with FB.

I do so agree though about people being on various sorts of portable technology rather than fully experiencing the situation they are in. Look at all the people videoing an event rather than immersing themselves in the experience, checking their whatevers wherever they are. I remember deciding on some occasions to not even take a camera with me to an event so I could concentrate on what was going on.

But I am a hypocrite, when I first got a mobile phone I'd be texting all the time and checking it. Not so bad now thank goodness.

Yes I do agree with this! I think I am just lucky to not have many 'oversharers' on my friends list.

Also, why do you think people keep posting when they never get any response? I have an uncle who is a priest and is obsessed with football. He posts constant updates about football and no one ever 'likes' or comments on anything he does. You have to wonder, why bother? Surely Facebook is about interacting. It is not interacting if no one is interacting back!

I don't understand that one at all (but I feel a little bad for them). If nobody responds, it's safe to assume nobody was interested. In which case don't keep repeating it...
