And if Facebook didn't exist, people would find other ways. Then I got a gobful of abuse from my sister who asked me how I dared delete them! My brother gave me a similar amount of abuse, as did a couple of close friends.
How rude! My dad couldn't find a relative of ours on Facebook last night; so he asked if I still had her as a friend and I said I couldn't find her. Given all the !!!! that's going on, I wouldn't be that surprised if she's decided to take a break for a bit.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I hate when people post subliminal status updates such as...
"So fed up! / In tears, so fed up of life"
Then there is a comment asking what's up. The maudlin OP on Facebook says "Oh, can't say on here, I'll inbox ya!"
It makes me laugh when people post status updates like that and they have hundreds of friends and no one comments! But there are loads of gifs about attention seeking updates on Hatebook!
It is just people, usually very insecure, declaring their undying love to their current partner whom they have only been with for two minutes and the other person has not even bothered to retort, instead you just see badges saying that they have clocked whatever level on whatever computer game or they are counting down the days until the next computer game is out!
I am glad I have permanently deleted that site!0 -
I'm not a regular Facebook user but I do use it for a few things. It helps me stay in touch with a few people who have schedules that make phone conversations difficult and I use it for professional reasons too. Today, I decided I'd have a quick gander on there to see what was going on.
Chickenpox, apparently.
No less than four people have taken to posting pictures of their naked kids covered in chickenpox, two of whom have publicly accessible profiles and all of whom have more than 500 "friends" so are most likely the type who add anyone.
Ignoring the seedier potential issues that could arise from this, who on earth thinks to themselves when their child is unwell that the only logical course of action is to take multiple photographs of their child and upload them for everyone to have a gander at? It is utterly absurd and I'm sure the kids a few years from now will be so happy.
I'm reminded of a television advert featuring a 3 or 4 year old kid from a year back advertising plastic pants for bedwetters. I always thought at the time that he was going to hate his parents for that a few years later. I imagine when these kids find out that way back when their loving mummies and daddies shared there pox-riddled bodies with everyone they'll be equally as upset about it.
I've blocked all four of them from invading my timeline further with that nonsense. It's enough to put you off your pizza.
As for the subject of using phones while out and about, I will confess that for a few reasons if my phone beeps, I will check why it is beeping. If it is a message from someone who may send a message that is important or urgent I will read it, if not I'll ignore it for later. I think it's unreasonable to expect someone never to check their phone if they receive a text message but it is also inconsiderate for someone to start replying to messages, checking Twitter etc. when it is not necessary to do so.0 -
My Facebook experience is absolutely nothing like this. Yes, I do see people's holiday snaps and post my own along with pictures of odd things I see during my day. But mostly it's people chatting about what's on telly or what book they are reading or posting amusing retro ads or pictures that can lead to all sorts of interesting discussions. I have plenty of FB friends I've never read and probably won't ever meet but who I chat to about our shared hobbies and interests. Nothing insidious at all.0

When I did some research into how people learn at a number of Red brick Medical schools, it became clear that Facebook was a useful learning tool, the students had setup their own informal learning sets where they shared good information and links to resources that would help them get through the next hurdle, assessment exam or rotation. Also you might want to look up the Project at Leeds Medical school where students are issued with iPhones pre loaded with clinical apps, calculation tools and reference materials.
Facebook just like mobile devices are a tool and thats all, I use it to keep in touch with family and friends abroad, as well as checking out possible candidates.
I have got rid of the idiots on my Facebook, bar for one who is more funny than annoying.0 -
I used to play a mobile game with someone. If I didn't play my turn within 12 hours, he'd moan. I then got fed up of it and resigned. He wouldn't stop pestering me over playing with hm.
Quite sad tbh. I had friends who play the same game. Not unusual to be waiting a day or more for someone play. But unlike him, I understand that not everyone is attached to their phones.Sealed pot challenge #232. Gold stars from Sue-UU - :staradmin :staradmin £75.29 banked

I use FB and get fed up with the slogan posters, horoscopes and various other rubbish. I don't get why people who post they have gone on something like a date night, then post an hour later 'drinking chablis at such and such a place'. Can't be a very good date!
What is the attraction of posting so many selfies? It smacks of attention seeking.
I get annoyed if I am with people whose phone goes off and they want to deal with it, not even bothering to say 'excuse me' while they turn their attention elsewhere.0 -

I agree that social media is just a tool. I love Twitter as I mostly follow academics, journalists and writers. What is great is that they often post links to newly published research or hard-to-find articles etc. When people say they can't see the point of Twitter because "I don't want to see what someone had for breakfast" I think well don't follow those sort of people!0 -

Yeah, I like Twitter. It is a wonderful tool, if you know how to use it. There are a lot of people who post nonsense on Twitter, these are the people who are on Twitter because it is considered cool to be on Twitter. There are others who use Twitter in a positive way such as in the way you describe and if you follow the right kind of people for your interests it can be a very fulfilling experience as well as a useful networking utility.0
