I admire all of you who have been getting out and running in this heat, it just seems to sap all my energy when I'm running.

Race for Life 5k tomorrow. I haven't run in over a week because my hip has still been sore, plus this weather makes it far harder, so I'm just going out in the hope of running the whole course tomorrow rather than doing a good time. It's forecast to be a bit cooler but still 19°. After that, I'll see how my hip is holding up and make a decision on whether to rest it again or do the second half of c210k.
Good luck with race for life today, hope your hip holds out and the weather is kind to you.

Great thread, surprised I haven't spotted it before!

I was forced onto 3 and 5 mile cross country runs at school which resulted in me wanting to do any thing but run for the rest of my life-but 25 years later (last July) I gave it a try and suddenly found I loved it! A year ago remember how tough I found it to just do 5km. In the last year I've built up from 5k to 10k, 10 miles, half marathon and culminating in my first marathon at Milton Keynes in May which I thoroughly enjoyed despite struggling a bit in the last 5 miles.

Now it's the heat that seems to be my greatest enemy, I'm on the list for the Amsterdam marathon in October and the summer training is much harder than the winter training of six months ago. I'm averaging just over 100 miles a month. My next event is either the Maidenhead hm in September or maybe the Isle Of Wight hm next month-in the meantime I just need to keep up my fitness levels.

I did it! I was quite hopeful of a good time as it was overcast and breezy here this morning. Unfortunately, as soon as we set off the sun came out which seemed to up the temperature by about 10°. Between that and the congestion due to so many people running on the same course, I did it in 45mins dead. I did walk about 1k of it because I was seriously overheating at about 3.5k. I wasnt the only one, there were lots of red faced people who stopped and walked at that point. Generally I like the warmeŕ weather and hate winter but when I'm running it's the other way round.

I think my hip issue is muscular. It hurts when I waĺk but was fine after running for about 500m and didn't bother me again until after I finished. I can rest it for a while now and see if it improves.

    Evening all
Well done to those who have raced recently. I did the women's 10k today in Milton Keynes, it too was a tad warm and I didn't manage a PB, I WAS 4 mins short and finished in 1:11 but considering how warm it was I'm happy with that. I've had a massively busy week what with well being week at work where I swam three times and took part in 3 taster fitness sessions (circuits, Pilates and Zumba) as well as running Tuesday, Thursday and Friday, it was my sons 18th and I've been up early finishing my overseas marking. Blimey I'm knackered just looking at what I've done, no wonder I didn't get a PB!
Anyways, calmer week ahead, off to bed early tonight and no races now for a month or so.
    Have a great week everyone

Well done everyone on your various achievements!

I finally headed back out on Friday as I couldn't leave it any longer and it wasn't quite as hot as it had been the previous few days, or so I thought! I wanted to crack on with week 3 otherwise I felt like I would be going backwards. It was hard and I couldn't quite complete the second 3 minutes but I'm blaming the heat for that. The bright red face was of epic proportions at the end

Went out earlier to do day 2, also a bit of a struggle but just about managed to get through it. I have my new trainers and no knee pain so far so things seem to be back on track. It's 3 weeks on Wednesday until my holiday, I'm away for nearly three weeks and I doubt that I'll be doing any running in that time but there should be plenty of walking so that will help keep the levels up hopefully. I'll keep going until then and pick up somewhere when I get back.

Not sure when I'll be going out next with The Ashes starting on Wednesday though :D
  • Whilst the weather has been hot I have been reducing my runs to 15/20 minutes. I managed a 40 minute run yesterday before getting too hot. I do like all the lovely weather we have been having however it isn't great for running in and makes me feel very tired!

You can get used to running in the heat, but it is harder.

Your body is already working hard to cool you, plus the exertion of the exercise itself. If you use a heart rate monitor you'll notice your heart rate will be higher than normal for the same level of effort.

I've still be doing long runs, but have been training to heart rate zone rather than pace in this heat.

    Hi guys, newbie here.

I've just started couch to 5k running again but I struggle for time a lot and have two young children so plan on basically doing it in my front room ~ I know it's not the same but it's better then sitting on the couch ;)

It's quite nice in someways though as it means when I am supposed to be walking I am really just dancing away and walking to my music which I couldn't do outside...:rotfl: god help me if anyone peeked in my window.

I've just completed week 1 day 2 although it was a week today that I did day 1 but I will try and fit it in more.

I would say I would go outside running on Sat but we are going bike riding that day so no point pushing myself to much.

I'm not going to set myself any set days I will just do each one when I can, I really do struggle to find even half an hour sometimes I swore I would do it yesterday but by time I had finished work sorted house made tea etc I just didn't find that space.

I did run for the last 2:30 instead of walking the last 1:30 and I managed just fine so hopefully I am only on my way up.

Fully recovered from 10k and I've managed a 30 minute 2.22 mile run on Tuesday morning and a gentle 3.47 mile jog tonight. Planning on an early morning run tomorrow, a long run Saturday (aiming for 16-17k) and a gentle jog Sunday.
A localish hotel is offering 6 weeks summer gym membership for £60 and as I teach and break up on the 22nd I thought I'd go for it and try and get some strength training in along with some swimming and a few classes. Hope everyone is managing to get out and enjoy the summer weather. Happy running
