  • it doesn't sound impossible - the key is probably setting off at a sensible pace at the event, you are far more likely to run the whole distance if you don't set off like a rocket i.e. whatever pace you can run 5k at, set off at something slower if you are doing 10k

if you progressively increase your distance from 5k to 10k over the coming weeks you should be fine and it will give you confidence - i'd focus on covering the distance at any running pace rather than time it takes

2-3 weeks is very tight, but I think it's likely to be doable as long as you're not feeling utterly wrecked after the 5.2k and you just aim to complete the 10k without walking, not to go fast.

I think you need to have worked up to about 8k the week before the race. During the final week, just do 1 or 2 shorter runs so that you have some rest before the big day. Then the combination of rest and being in a race will take care of the final 2k.

Maybe aim for a run of about 6.5k this weekend, then a 3k and a 4k during the week, then a 8k next weekend, then something like a 3k then a 2k in the week leading up to the 7th.

This coming back to running business is hard. Roughly 4 and a half hours running just over the last 3 days, with 2 more runs planned for tomorrow. When I'm not running, I want to be sleeping. I think I slept for 11 hours on both Saturday and Sunday. Or eating. ...And yet, still much, much slower than a couple of months ago! So much catching up to do.

It is really nice to have made noticeable progress every few days though.

(Don't worry, not overdoing it. Probably. I've taken good advice on how to go about this, and the Garmin has been banished for now so I don't chase paces that I can't do again yet.)

Just popped on to update, I managed to complete the 10k santa race today in 1 hour12 minutes, albeit with an injury to the inner side of my ankle. So no more running until the new year for me now. I think I need a good pair of running shoes with plenty of cushioning.

Thank you for all your advice.

Well done red-boxer on your Santa run :T

Missed running this week as I have got a cold and it is part on my chest :( hoping it goes quickly so I can get back to it properly before Christmas and just exercising in general.

I used to run and I want to get back into it.

I probably won't be a regular here, but I have been reading to psyche myself back into the idea.

I've neutral feet, but a history of pushing to hard and getting inflamed tendons. Need to be good, take it slow, and remember I'm not 18 anymore :D

Realistically, given how long its been since I've run and my tendency to self injure, I'll be limiting myself to doing midweek 2/3k's and weekend 5k's for the first couple of months.

I'm broke at the moment so can't justify the £20 the local shop charges for analysis and trainer recommendation - I used to get on well with Asics, but I've been out of the game for a while and wanted reassurance that the ones I've just bought (Gel-Enduro 9's) aren't complete lemons.

Do I remember right that Asics are on the small side? I've gone for a size up, but I'm not second guessing.

I can't see myself doing much more than 5k's for the next 6 months (treadmill and outdoor but no trail), and if need be I'll happily buy new ones in June. Just have to last me until then.

    Thanks for the advice.
That sounds like a classic case of premature extrapolation.

I think you're right about Asics. Mine are a full size bigger than my normal shoe size, too.

  • Hello there, I work in a hotel that has a gym and get to use it for free so that's great, but I have problems with my feet, having a very minor operation in January but hopefully that will sort things out as I'd LOVE to run / get fit.
I bought trainers for the pretty muddy run in the summer and did complete that but wow did it hurt..
Subscribed to the thread and hope to be running very soon! Cheers x

Yes Acsis are slightly smaller sized, I went 1/2 a size up when I had them. Have had New Balance ones though the last two times and I do prefer them. Maybe it would be worth going to a specialist running shop and see what they recommend try a few different ones out, no obligation to buy them from there when/if you decide to swop them out.

Missed my run last week, cold has moved off my chest but still have the sniffles slightly! Going to do something light at home, planning a run with my friend Christmas eve then we are getting back in to it in the new year. Currently planning my new workout schedule...

Anyone else here training for a spring marathon?

My training plan started over Christmas, which was an excellent excuse to get an hour or 2 each day of peace and quiet and frosty sunshine, away from all the noise and chaos of the extended family. More room for Christmas dinner, too.
