It does tone up & yes have lost! Thigh muscles are definitely firmer!! Its also good for your posture. It's sometimes hard to practice on a Saturday as sometimes its very busy. I don't mind just pooting along but my oh & dd get frustrated they can't practice their moves!! Unfortunately my dd (10) does need the whole rink for her routine & shes not very tolerant with non / new skaters & me just slowly going round! Or she tries to get me to do things way beyond my capabilities! But its something we all do as a family!

I really need to go again. Was going to go this evening but DH didn't want to wait to eat :-(. I wasn't very well last week to go so itching now!

I like the idea of posture enhancing - it is something I have always struggled with. I also read it is good for strengthening core muscles as well - again, I hope so!

Hi everyone! I went to the rink with my friend last night for a bit of practice and ended up falling crack on my knee - I actually nearly threw up with the pain!!

It is still so sore but there's not even a bruise!! Thoroughly enjoyed it though. Might treat myself to some boots next payday. Someone mentioned you can get away with not buying expensive ones if you're starting out so just wondered if anyone had any recommendations please?

Mine are Grafs think they were £60 but they weren't adults! They take about 8 weeks to fit properly & for your feet to feel comfortable. We heated ours with hair dryer and moulded them. My dd has Jacksons but hers were far more expensive & she has had her blades moved to suit her but she does do jumps etc.
Friend at rink has just bought some off ebay. You can get some good ones if you're prepared to wait, we bought ds4's figure skates off ebay, Risports £15, but he has hockey skates as well.

    So pleased you're enjoying!

Wear kneepads:) I remember all too well that sick feeling after going down like a sack of spuds! Seriously though, you can wear knee pads under your trousers so no one will know if you're a bit shy. They seriously take the brunt of the fall away.

Re starter skates, the Graf bolero's or 500's aren't a bad beginner skate. Very well padded so pretty comfortable and don't take a huge amount of breaking in. Small toe pick though which will be easier to manage but when you upgrade your skates again, you will prob end up tripping as better skates have bigger toe picks. (I'm assuming here you're looking at figure rather than hockey skates) not too good for spinning either.

I'm on Risport RF4's with coronation comet blades but started with the 500's.

Thank you. I shall have a look at these mumtosix mentioned the grafs too.

Is there anything I need to look for with the pads?

Re knee pads. They sell packs on Amazon of knee, elbow and wrist guards for skate boarders, roller derby etc for about £20. As long as the pad surface is smooth so that if you do fall, your knee goes with you rather than staying put while your body plummets. I'll try and find a link and add it.

Wrist guards are also a good idea. If your rink has a shop attached you might even get sme there but they will be more expensive. Knee pads won't necessary protect your knees from all falls but they will absorb some of the impact.

Those ones have a hard shell which is what you need. The fabric covered ones may grip the ice as you fall and could prob do more damage.

    I remained standing again!!

Today we had to walk across the rink; then take four steps and stop - repeat that from one side of the rink to the other and after that we had to take two steps and glide from one side of the rink to the other.

When I went to practice after the lesson there was an adult with a child behind me and the child couldn't stand on the rink and every time I seen the child the adult had the childs two arms and the child was waving their skates in the air. A mother of one of the children who is in the same class as me spoke to me while I was on the rink and she wasn't so I stopped to answer her. When the adult and child came up behind me they would not go round me so I went to the exit and didn't practice any more because all I could see were the childs blades in mid air and I didn't fancy getting my legs sliced!!

I am glad I went though!! :rotfl: :j

Prob a good move to get out of the way! And sounds like your lesson went well, and well done for not falling. :D
