    Update.
Yesterday was my first chance for a few day to look at desktop . Memory arrived before installing it I gave the inside of PC a good clean with fine unused paint brush. Removed loads of dust.
Inserted the memory and switched on. Fan ran so loudly and windows would not boot up. I unpluged and removed memory sticks and switched on again. Fan as quiet as ever and Windows booted up.

So, I either inserted the memory incorrectly or it was wrong memory that I ordered.
I'm back on here Tues but the son of a pal is calling in to have a look at things for me.
Thanks again for the advice given.

Take the existing memory out and replace them with the new, to see if that works. Better to do it sooner so that you can send them back if they don't work for you.
Careful how you handle and insert them.

Would I be able to return them? Surely it would be my error in ordering the wrong ones?

It sounds to me like it might've been incorrectly inserted rather than the wrong memory. If it was the wrong memory you would typically just get POST (Power On Self Test) beeps.

It's important to unplug from the mains too, when inserting memory, as there may still be power to the motherboard.

If I have an issue with new memory, I take out all of the modules and then try one at a time in the lowest numbered memory slot.

    Update.
The young 'Wizz Kid' has just left and things have improved greatly. Re the new memory, he installed it one at a time and it works perfectly. He was kind enough to say that it was possibly inserted in the wrong order but if I'm honest, I think it was me not putting them in incorrectly!

I now have 9.97 GB of Free space and no issues with Firefox not responding.

He has suggested that I purchase a new internal HD (1GB) and that he would clone the contents of my C drive to my new drive.

He did a Highjackthis scan and no issues were found. He deleted several duplicate software progs and set up Backup for a daily backup.

    Looks like alls well.

I have booted up 4 times since the alterations and the longest time is 2 minutes.

"He has suggested that I purchase a new internal HD (1GB) "

    I presume 1TB.

Unless you really need that space, spend the money on an SSD instead.

The two minutes I'm refering to is the time it takes for Windows to open and be able to use Firefox.

The time taken for just Windows to load is now nearer 40 seconds.
