I hear you LOUD and clear. I'm off, chastised, to do as instructed. Thanks.

I DIDN'T REALISE THAT IT WAS NECESSARY TO SHOUT TO GET YOU TO FOLLOW SIMPLE INSTRUCTIONS!

It seems I'm unable to post a screenshot on Hijackthis as too many characters 172627.

If your HJT log really contains 172627 bytes then you have far to much unnecessary crap installed e.g. a quick search on here for a WIN7 HJT log, first hit shows this one here with only 10974 bytes.

No wonder it takes six minutes to boot up!

I was replying to GunJack' post where he typed in CAPS. Hence my reply.

As for simple instructions, they may be to you but not to me. Thank you for your help.

Thanks to all the posters that have posted advice. I think it best I close this now but I'm grateful for the offers of help.

Norman-B, did you complete the clean-up? If so, how much free disk space do you now have, and is the pc getting a bit better?

I have a dodgy "i" key, so ignore spelling errors due to "i" issues, ...I blame Apple :D

Why close it before the job is done?

Though I do think that you should choose one way or the other.

Back up and run a clean install or clean up with the help of the bods here.

You can save the HJT log to a text file and upload it to a file hoster, such as http://www.datafile.com/ then to copy and paste the resultant link here.

I did, thanks. My free space went from just under 2gb to 3.08gb.

I will be following your advice in your pm. Hope to do that this week-end with the help of a young son of a friend.

Re hjt log, I have just failed miserbly to do this. I run the scan on hjt but just get my head around how to post it.

you had the hijackthislog in text format (ie notepad), many posts/days back, all you have to do is split it up to post it here if it's too long for mse, or use one of the two sites mentioned to upload it to the web, and post a link to it. The o4 section would be a start.

    Save it to your Desktop.

Open DataFileHost, click 'Choose', when the Explorer box appears, navigate to the file on your Desktop and double click on it. Click on 'Upload'. Copy the resultant 'Download' link and paste it in your next reply.

Note to anyone downloading from datafilehost: Remove tick from "Use our download manager and get recommended downloads" before hitting the 'Download' botton on the left.

    Update.
Yesterday was my first chance for a few day to look at desktop . Memory arrived before installing it I gave the inside of PC a good clean with fine unused paint brush. Removed loads of dust.
Inserted the memory and switched on. Fan ran so loudly and windows would not boot up. I unpluged and removed memory sticks and switched on again. Fan as quiet as ever and Windows booted up.

So, I either inserted the memory incorrectly or it was wrong memory that I ordered.
I'm back on here Tues but the son of a pal is calling in to have a look at things for me.
Thanks again for the advice given.
