My dad, who is 65, bought a laptop today. I told him to buy a specific brand and type of laptop.

He went into PC World and the salesman managed to convince him he needed a laptop with Cloud, the new Microsoft Office (for £160) and all the other fancy stuff. He doesn't need this stuff and they took advantage of him. Instead of paying the £280 he paid over £500

They gave him the laptop in a brand new bag so no box.

Can he return the laptop even though there was no box therefore it cannot be returned unopened and they already installed Office?

You are feel the need to give him advice but you sent him into PC world on his own?

If you have an overbearing salesman, someone who has never had a computer before could easily be overwhelmed and talked into purchasing things they don't need!

    That is a salesman's job.

If folk are unsure then you should go with someone who has some knowledge or better still buy it online.

This post explains exactly why your father is unlikely to get any money back or an exchange. By your own admisson a perfectly reasonable and able man, regardless of age, bought a laptop of his own free will. So as was said at the start of this thread, a simple change of mind does not entitle a buyer to any refund or exchange except by the goodwill of the company.

No that post does not explain why he unlikely to get any money back. At no point have I said whether he is a "perfectly reasonable and able man" nor have I said he is "doolally". You are also making an assumption based on some of the selective info I have decided to share.

I believe he was taken advantage of due to his lack of knowledge (and yes, IMO partly due to his age) and that salespeople are overbearing etc. That is my opinion and whether or not anyone agrees with it was not the point.

This one does explain why he won't get money back:

He has no right return it unless it's faulty. He may be able to appeal to their generosity to return the laptop for a degree of a refund/exchange, but it's up to them. But even then, he's decided to buy office, and it's been installed. the license has been used, so it is not possible to "return" it as he will still has access to the product.

Although it's not what you want to hear, they have provided what he chose to buy.

As you have stated, it was mentioned at the start of the thread so I'm not really sure what your input is meant to suggest.

You just cant help it can you.

At what age do you believe that people become unable to go into a shop on their own?
  • Meryl Streep is 65 (just an example) No doubt we could come up with lists and lists of people who are 65 (and believe it or not even older!!) who are able to go outside, shop, socialise, drive a car, ride a bike, do exercise and even go to work, some of them holding down really quite responsible jobs all on their own...

So this is my last response to your baiting:

Did I say he couldn't go to the shop on his own? Did I say he couldn't wash himself? Did I say anything more than his age and my opinion on him and only him i.e. not everyone over the age of 65?

"due to his lack of knowledge"

My father, my opinion of him and since I know him, I know what he's like.

I am glad you have been offended because it seems you enjoy doing to it to others.

Enjoy your day Bantex I certainly will :)

And I do hope that your new velcro shoes are very comfortable

    Why mention his age then?
You did not say his height, weight, hair colour etc.

Oh wait... I didn't. You are assuming something just to take part in an argument but you are arguing against a point that I did not make.
