Did you look at the 'small print' of the chassis and engine no.? Most people do.....

The VIN number yes, as it is in the windscreen. I doubt if most people could find the engine number on their cars. ;)

Even though more and more people are getting caught out buying dodgy motors I'd like to bet that the majority of buyers don't bother checking and serial numbers on used cars let alone look past the shiny paintwork.

He'll get done for fraud, you'll get done for blackmail....result.

    Doubt it.

    S.21 Theft Act 1968:

    "Blackmail.

(1)A person is guilty of blackmail if, with a view to gain for himself or another or with intent to cause loss to another, he makes any unwarranted demand with menaces; and for this purpose a demand with menaces is unwarranted unless the person making it does so in the belief—

(a)that he has reasonable grounds for making the demand; and

(b)that the use of the menaces is a proper means of reinforcing the demand."

Demanding that someone pay for tax that the vehicle was advertised as having is clearly a "reasonable ground for making the demand" and, arguably, the use of menaces (report them for non tax) is a proper mean of enforcing the demand.

  • The OP has been done over by the seller, just like what I have been with a car with a none working horn even though it came with a fresh MOT.

Not much you can do about it although the OP could try small claims/Moneyclaim

Least I get the pleasure of leaving negative eBay feedback about the horn.
