Fail to stop, is it worth reporting

  • Have I got this right?

You damaged your wheels on the curb and you want to report the driver of a vehicle that happened to be going the other way because he didn't leave you enough room?

I would just like to point out that you were the driver of the car that hit an obstruction, the van drivers actions are really immaterial, he didn't hit anything.

Perhaps you should have a think about the standard of your own driving before thinking about reporting others to the police.
  • You didnt even slow down yourself according to the video...

Incorrect, I certainly did, the GPS generated speed is laggy. Speed was below 25mph and lower when braking.

I damaged my vehicle, therefore I called the police to report it, so if I had to make a claim on my insurance, everything was above board.

You don't need to report own damage to the police and your insurers don't require it either.

If you ever think there is not enough room you should stop, he would then be responsible for hitting a stationary vehicle.

If you wanted to avoid him you should at the very least got partially off the road.

You will not get anywhere with this.....he didnt hit you.....you hit the kerb.....simples !!

Emergency stops from now on, sod who may be behind me, maybe I could earn a nice little wiplash injury claim out of it. Do things the wrong way from now on me thinks :money:

My driving instructor used to have a saying which I think is a good one:

    "Less space, less speed."

I wouldn't have been travelling as fast as that in the first place on such a narrow road where there was a bend coming up, and when I saw the van I would've slowed right down.
    What will your verse be?

Didn't know that, and no harm in doing so is there?

The police won't be interested unless an offence has been committed or someone injured.

If someone behind you is too close to stop then it's their problem.

Best to get a rear facing camera too.

If you have time to check what's behind you then do so, but if you don't then just perform the stop. Each driver must take responsibility for their own driving. In theory, if everyone is driving responsibly then every vehicle behind you will have sufficient time and room to stop as well.

The dashcam has served me incredibly well for almost 3 years but unfortunately at almost £350, and with people like this on the roads, there is no more money to get a new one.

Maybe these stills with alterations will help:

Those stills do not show him on your side of the road. They show that he has left a small gap (about 1 foot or less in my opinion) between himself and the verge, probably to allow for a bit of swing of the trailer or maybe because the trailer is just slightly wider than the van (something your clips seem to bear out)

    You have misjudged the gap
