Windows XP support ended - day 1

And it is illegal to sell a M$ Key Code (for any Microsoft operating system) without the correct paper sticker COA License.
Someone needs to tell Microsoft, then, because I bought Windows 8 as a download from Microsoft, direct, and received a nice piece of email which included "Windows 8 Pro Product key: XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX". I never received a paper license.0 -

And where do these third party suites, vendors and volunteers get there security updates from? No Windows operating system is Freeware.
Of course MSE is extended, Win7 uses it too, but I would never and will never trust my system to that clunky piece of garbage. That's the real nonsense!
ClamWin does not include a Real Time scanner. For you and I, and anyone with enough knowledge, that doesn't matter. But the average XP user just does not know how to keep on updating the database.
No matter how good and well-meaning any Open-Source software supplier is, they will always be well behind a commercial AV programme, and well behind the malware and scam producers.I think this job really needs
a much bigger hammer.

It's unclear what you're talking about. AV suites have never provided, or relied on, vendor security updates.
Vendor security updates are necessary to fix holes in operating systems. Well, not strictly: in principle third parties could provide binary patches, but it's unlikely anyone will try. And sometimes it's possible to substantially mitigate problems without needing to patch the OS at all. But yes, security updates are required to fix problems properly.
However, AV solutions use various pattern matching techniques, and are able to provide real-time mitigation of security problems. They may break functionality in the process, but they provide reasonable security against anything they can detect, even if the OS flaw is not yet fixed. If they couldn't, any problem in XP over the years would have persisted until the following patch Tuesday, at the earliest.
There is no announced date from any of the AV vendors as to EOL on their XP products. Kaspersky claim to still support 98(SE), ME and NT 4.0, after all.0 -
Have not read the rest past Page 1 here, but here is the truth: -
the government has, as usual, left things till the last minute and begged M$ to support XP for all the NHS and gov. departments that still run it. Same applies to certain large corporations in Britain, lots of businesses still running an antique operating system, despite all the warnings M$ issued.
M$ complied and pledged to support these concerns for 12 months, but - repeat, but - it only applies to those commercial organisations and gov. departments that have requested and paid for this support. Home consumers get zilch, but why should they expect anything different? I am no lover or supporter of M$, but this is a very old o/s which was paid for a long time ago, count how many more o/s's M$ has brought out since then.Would you buy a car, or any product, and expect the vendor to keep repairing and/or renewing it for nothing? The fact is that anyone running Windows XP now is asking for trouble. There will be no more Windows Security Updates. This means that no Internet Security or Anti-Virus programme, can work with XP. The AV databases are not only out of date, they no longer exist, at least for the home consumer.
Looking for Windows 7? Good luck, M$ stopped manufacturing it a while ago! Those companies with stocks , can now charge what they want for it. Have a 7 disc and want/need a COA License? CAREFUL! There are cowboys all over the place on E bay and Amazon, selling Key Codes by post and email. You don't get a proper, genuine, Microsoft COA sticker with it. And it is illegal to sell a M$ Key Code (for any Microsoft operating system) without the correct paper sticker COA License.

(Incidentally, I have 4 Windows 8 licences, and they were all supplied electronically by Microsoft.)0 -
There's a 'mortgage free by...' Forum in MSE, so how about a 'Windows free by...' one...

I too bought a Windows 8 Pro Product ID for about £25 around November 2012. Nothing through the post at all. In fact, I just downloaded the 64 bit .iso image, through www.mswos.com, using the order details, which I preserved. I will be installing on a new 8GB system, so I need the 64 bit version. The old 32 bit 2GB system died, probably the motherboard. I rang Microsoft UK (well, got transferred to a US call centre), and they say they will telephone activate once I have the new one up and running.
People sometimes forget that the Media Center Edition was XP as well. The EPG was rock solid, and it meant you can archive TV programs how you want. In those days, you can get a PVR, but it's a pain to keep the recordings when the hard disk is full.
XP Professional supports dynamic disks, so I was using two 250GB IDE drives as a 500GB. With the right setup, the old PC was still perfectly usable, until the motherboard died.
XP did everything I needed. Internet Explroer 8 was becoming a liability, but I can run Opera, Chrome etc. instead.
I wonder what the justification is for I hear the civil service is spending £5 million pounds on extending support for XP. Drivers, I expect. If they try to upgrade to 7 or 8, lots of their PCs can't get drivers for various bits and pieces. Not the right time to buy new PCs for the entire civil service, expect.

If microsoft hadnt ended support for XP it wouldnt have spurred me on to try Linux as there is nothing to lose trying it ....I put ububtu on my desktop as a dual boot and after a few teething problems its working much quicker than XP ...
I am also trying Linux Mint on my netbook which has windows 7 on both linux systems work much quicker than the windows operating systems....
It just takes a little getting used to the different way things are done but linux has some brilliant forums and people willing to offer advice..I found Linux Mint worked straight from installing.... on youtube and sites like that but ubuntu needed a few tweaks in the software centre0
