I'm sometimes surprised at how little the self service tills are watched by staff. Quite a few times when I've been queuing up to pay, there have been people in front of me scanning loads of items who then just pack them up and leave without paying, sometimes when a staff member is quite close by but not paying attention. I hope my post didn't imply I was deliberately dishonest, but sometimes there are small pricing errors which I don't notice until after I've left the shop - I always wait for the 'beep' to check an item has scanned because sometimes the scanners don't pick the item up first go.
I was quite lucky once, though. An item I wanted wasn't anywhere on the item list at the till so a member of staff manually put it through as half price, even though I told him the item should cost more, he said it was fine
