I thought that had happened to me the other day, but sadly it hadn't!!

I felt so guilty though as I had a dead light bulb with me and I needed to replace and wanted to make sure I got the right one (halogen push in type) .

As I packed the bag and scanned I popped the old (dead) bulb in the carrier and the machine started saying something like 'unscanned item in bag'

the supervisor came over as I had something had had a security tag on it and I showed her and she just laughed, but I felt so guilty the self scanner was shouting that it thought I was pinching something I hadn't scanned!!!!

Had same issue in Tesco last week, scanned a yoghurt put it on the belt and kept telling me to put the next item on the belt... so i did.... wahey free yogurt thinks i....

Later i accidentally put two potatoes in as onions, thought "oh they'll be cheaper than that" called over sales assistant to change them, ended up £1.05 more expensive... God works in mysterious ways....

IA don't worry about it. What I do worry about is Somerfield charging me three times for something I only bought twice! Ok, it's only 99p, but ARGH! :rotfl:

Just put 38p in the next charity collection tin you see.

Good idea, that way you can feel good about what happened, and make sure that it is a charity close to your heart.

Also, it can wait until Ste gets paid!

If its any chain store, or especially one as big as Tesco, I'd not only do it, I'd *try* for it! If its a little tiny independent store, I go back. For instance, when I was still buying science fiction magazines, I picked up a couple in a tiny shop, and carried on round the store. I was so long looking, I forgot I had them in my hand, and just walked out, without paying. I was about 200 yards away when I realised, but I went back, explained what had happened, and paid. They were astounded, and so grateful. Even now, I think I'd do that in that type of store (except I couldn't afford to buy anything, sadly!) but in a Tesco's or equivalent, never. I get Tesco's deliveries, and if there's the odd extra bit in my shopping, I just use it, I never tell them. Their profits are so huge, and my money is so tight, I don't see why I should. Its not immoral - its my morality: see amended sig.

a friend of mine ended up being prosecuted for shoplifting in tesco after using the self scanner.

She had some clothes and was having problems and they lady kept helping she genuinly missed a top, the alarm went off and she rushed over and said I'm sorry can i pay for this i've missed it. The guy was a total git and refused she got arrested and the police didn't want to prosecute as it was a genuine mistake but also she was in a very bad state mentally and under gp supervision. Tesco refused to stop the prosecution and out of fear she admited it to get a caution as she couldn't cope with court who the police said would have found her not guilty.

Obviously not the same as your jar of food and I would have probably done what you did but just telling you how evil tesco can be.

Its not your fault tesco cant afford to buy a decent scanning machine is it! :rotfl:

You tried and it didnt work so dont feel bad about it, ive been in tesco's a few times and seen mums with buggys putting things under the buggy and im sure they dont account for them when they go to the checkout also what about the people that eat around the store (that really gets me angry) im sure they dont give the empty wrapper to the checkout person either.

To be honest if you had gone back in with it you wouldnt have got any thanks for it anyway, so dont worry your not a bad person some of us would have done the same ;)

Mother Teresa of Calcutta wouldn't have. She'd be straight back into Tescos with her baby food and 38p. That's if she had lived until now and was Mother Teresa of Wolverhamption instead of Calcutta.

Mind you, quite what she's be doing buying baby food is beyond me, perhaps a secret love child and another cover up by the Catholic Church?

Grr, Those guys at the Vatican make my blood boil!

I needed a good laugh.... Thanks.

I would have done it. I have done it. Only mine was £5  for some photo's. the girl only rang in one set I paid, stood there for a little bit and she didn't ring any more through... So I walked away, very quickly!! In all fairness I had had to get them done twice as there was a problem with the first set.... That doesn't make it any better does it.
