Goldie, you're definitely inspirational :j:j:jIt is also awful how many older people dont spend the money they have on making their life easier and more enjoyable - you only come this way once and you cant take it with you!
Privately paid for hearing aids wouldn't even take up the whole of the excess pension she doesn't spend, but she won't do it. Though now that my brother's on the case, as well as me and my sister, she may be about to give in
Loving the sound of Mr Goldie's new phone :j though not the weather, I'd better check that myself right now.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
When I was having my ear problems a couple of years ago, I was very deaf, so I was fitted for an NHS hearing aid.
By the time it was ready, I didn't need it anymore as my hearing had come back. But wore it for a while just to see what it was like. It was very uncomfortable, and picked up the sound of everything, even the rustling of my clothes.
If I was still deaf, I genuinely wonder if I'd have spent money on a hearing aid - in some ways, NOT hearing was better than wearing that pesky aid.
So I can understand why she may not be keen. But if she's got nothing else to spend the money on, it probably would be a good thing for her to at least try.
It's a strange thing with parents. They start off being in charge, then you are equals, then there comes a point when you suddenly realise it's you who is in the driving seat.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Rain kept me away for a large part of the night - as I think you are not so very far away assume you had torrential rain too. Hope all okMade it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

The thing is, she gets upset at not being able to hear, Goldie - she can't hear at a restaurant table, when we're out with our Norfolk rellies, she can't hear us on the phone, she doesn't go to the local luncheon club any more because she can't hear what's being said. She's upset and isolated, and there's a way to stop that, but she won't take it. I honestly think its because its private, and she disapproves. And it sounds like a lot of money, even though she can well afford it (and I know, as I take care of her pension money). Never mind. Sorry for the hijack!
Definitely. Its very odd ....
Anyway, hope you didn't get too many lightning strikes down your way.
Sounds like my dad - he would have disapproved of going private!
It's such a shame that her life is being restricted, but she has the means to help improve things - no wonder you are being driven crazy - that's old folk for you.
I wonder if we'll be like that in 30years time? :eek:Rain kept me away for a large part of the night - as I think you are not so very far away assume you had torrential rain too. Hope all ok
I think we must have been quite lucky. We had some rain and thunder and lightening at around midnight and a bit more around 2am, but apart from that it all seemed quiet ( unless we slept though it)
We walked down to the polling station this morning at around 9.30am to vote. It seemed quite busy
We intend to stay up and see at least some of the results come in so we can get a flavour of how it's going.Early retired - 18th December 2014

We had some heavy rain yesterday evening, about 6pm, but nothing like they had in London.
While it was raining, my internet started dropping out again - it was like that for about half an hour until it stabilised again. Since the last period of trouble, it has dropped a couple of times, but I couldn't face ringing them again.
But I've now posted a message on their community page, asking for them to look into it - is it due to the recent engineering works, or is it weather.
I stayed up to about midnight last night to see the first couple of results. I had my phone on the bedside table, with the intention of looking at the results if I woke up in the night.
I woke at 4.15am, and had a look - and was gobsmacked at the way it was going. Couldn't get to sleep again after that, so we got up shortly after 5am. This is the first time since Diana died that the news has got me out of bed so early.
I knew it was going to be close, but I honestly thought that Remain would win.
Everything seems so uncertain now - what on earth is going to happen next.
WorryIng times indeed.
I said I'd wait until after the referendum before I make my first £500 investment in my S&S ISA. I nearly did it yesterday as the markets seemed to be rising. Glad I didn't as the stock market will drop like a stone today, I will make my investment today as planned - and hopefully will buy at the bottom of the market.
But, maybe I'll wait and see what happens in another hour when the markets open.
On the plus side, it's a lovely morning, and it's nice to enjoy the early morning sun.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Who knows what will happen.
My worse case scenario is that we get Boris as prime minister, Trump as US president and then the UK breaks up.
*sigh*
Getting up early has had it's advantages - we went for a nice walk in the early sunshine.
I've requested my funds purchase for my S&S ISA. I've put £500 in the Vanguard Life Strategy 60. The deal is settled on Monday, so who knows what price I will pay for the units. But I didn't want to hesitate anymore, otherwise I'd never have done it!
The internet connection is being annoying. I've posted on their forum, and I'm now involved with a series of messages. At first they wanted to send me a new router to try out, but I suggested to them it would be too much of a coincidence that a problem with my router started on the exact same day as they did engineering works on at the exchange.
Then someone else messaged and said they made some remote changes on the line. Since then, it's started to get worse again.
I'm going to message them again to give them the exact times it happened, and then walk away from the computer for a whileEarly retired - 18th December 2014
