I am the same with jars - we used to keep them to make jam & chutney for the charity, but it's better for us to buy new ones and get people to return them and we replace the lids.
They take up so much room - I reduced them down considerably when we moved - I just have one cardboard box on top of the kitchen cabinet - and hopefully this will reduce even further shortly.
Sad times make us take stock of what we've got...

Talking of sad times, now we've lost Prince as well. So many entertainers have gone already this year. The purchases sound good, Goldie. Victoria Wood's death spooked me a bit, I must say. Two of my grandparents died from environmental causes - mesothelioma being one, but apart from that everybody seems to live forever in my family ... this is a reminder that actually, people don'tOddly, I took steps to ensure that the next few days are free for me - I could have booked them up, but chose not to. I'm pleased with that
Mr Goldie's dad died when he was 66, and as Mr Golidie is now 64, I know it plays on his mind. But his dad smoked, and I know the family diet wasn't that good back then. I think Mr Goldie is good for a few years yet. Quite a few of his relatives have lived to their 90's. My parents lived to their 80's.
I know what you mean about people seeming to live for ever - it's like that with the Queen and Philip. They've been there as long as I can remember, and I can't imagine a time when they won't be with us.
As a result of the patio cleaning earlier this week, Mr Goldie has hurt his back.
He's a bit better now, but it has put back our decorating plans, but we did manage to make a start on the kitchen today.
I've been looking at lampshades for the bedroom we are decorating. I've found one I like on the Dunelm website, so I'll probably make the purchase in the next few days.
I had a few things up on eBay, and was thrilled to raise £50. Didn't expect that much, so it's a bit of a windfall.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Thats great, from ebay, well done you
And a Dunelm purchase - was it beanie who's just done that too? I like Dunelm, for some reason.
I think we should all agree that notwithstanding hurt backs, we all intend to live forever2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Hope Mr Goldie feels better soon...
Well done on the e-bay - I really must make a start on this myself.
My brother worries and he's only 35 - as Dad died when he was 69 and so did Grandad - so my brother thinks it will be same for him. It's doubtful, both Dad and Grandad were heavy smokers and drinkers, where my brother doesn't touch a drop and has never had a cigarette!! Different circumstances mean different outcomes I am sure.

I've just this minute done the Dunelm purchase. We've never had a Dunelm near us, so I'm not familiar with them, but they came up when I searched on Google. I like the range of goods they have, so I'd consider them again (assuming the purchase is okay, of course) . I've decided I love shopping online, it's so much easier than dragging yourself around the shops.
Yes, we've all got years left yet. When I was about 4 and started asking questions about death, my dad said I had at least 90 years left, so I should be at least 94 before I go!misscousinitt wrote: »Hope Mr Goldie feels better soon...

Mr Goldie is a lot better, thanks. We're pressing on with the decorating of the spare room today, so he might end up with another bad back tomorrow!
I think you are right, lifestyle plays a big part. It' s not just about genes
I think the weather seems to have been stuck in a groove since about last October. With a few exceptions, it seems to have been dull and chilly for the last 6 months or so. I'm glad we've got inside work to be getting on with, and hopefully spring will arrive properly in May, then we can get out in the gardenEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Often pop into Dunelm and seem to spend too much - this w/end went in and for first time ever didn't spend a penny. I have become frugalMade it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Lol, I don't think I'll ever be frugal, but I have learned to be considered with my purchases. Trouble is, there's a lot of purchases to consider!:rotfl:
Decorating is coming along nicely. We're taking our time, due to Mr Goldie's pesky back, but the majority of the painting is done in the spare room. The walls were previously painted blue, but it was a quite dark blue, which probably wasn't the best choice for north facing room. They are now painted a much lighter ocean mist blue ( almost Aqua) and it is much brighter. We have two chairs in that room (old dining room chairs, which we will paint at some point, and this will brighten things up as well.
The chairs have those tie on seat pads, in a fairly dark blue, and the pads just look wrong now, so I've been on eBay and put some nautical cushions on my watch list, so I can consider them for a day or so. (I said I considered my purchases!)
Actually, we have quite a list of small household items that we'd like, such as cookware and other bits and bobs. We can't get them all at once, so I'll maybe buy one or two a month
I've been doing spring cleaning as well. I vacuumed the sofas today, and couldn't help noticing how faded they were. 'Something' will have to be done about it at some point, but not yet. They are very comfortable, so we could consider getting them recovered, or we may end up getting new ones, but this would be at least three years away. But I'm going to start a savings pot with this in mind.
In the mean time, to give them a lift, I might get some new cushion covers.
It's exactly 6 months until Mr Goldie's 65th birthday, and we get more money coming in each month. :j. I think this is why I'm feeling confident that I can make my considered plans for expenditureEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Love the planning.
Once dyed some dust covers to throw over a sofa. Thought it would only be temporary but the colour worked in the room and the dust covers were large enough to cover the whole sofa. Threw on some lovely cushions we already had and the effect was good enough that we lived with it for about 6 years!Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became

Goldie, you sound like you and Mr Goldie are in a great position, I'm chuffed for you.
Sofas - I have a sofa, a little two seater, but I don't actually use it, though I used to all the time, and I can't quite figure out why not ... I think that once the living room is rejigged after the huge bookcase leaves, I'll be happier with it.

Yes, that's another solution - just get some sort of throw, and cover them up completely!Goldie, you sound like you and Mr Goldie are in a great position, I'm chuffed for you.

Thank you, that's very kind. Although we've been getting along more than happily in our current financial situation, the prospect of having a big increase in income is very reassuring.
I'm sure that once you get rid of your bookcase, you'll feel much happier when the room is how you want it and enjoy your sofa all over again.
Decorating is still proceeding. The ceiling and walls in the spare room are now fully painted, the new bedding is on, and the new lampshade is up. Still to be done - gloss paint on doorframes and skirtings, and curtains to go up
The kitchen walls and ceiling have also been painted, and our new wall sign is up. Door frames and skirting also still to be done.
I've also taken the opportunity to remove a couple of ornaments from shelves in the kitchen that I'm no longer happy with, which I'll try eBaying, otherwise they'll go to charity. I'll look out for replacements on our travels, and maybe another wall sign if one catches my eye.
A little bit of change is very regenerative, I find
I've also tackled the paperwork box, and a load has gone to recycling. Most of the paperwork is from when I was opening current accounts all over the place. I haven't looked at any of the booklets etc, so I think it's safe for them to go. Everything's online anyway.
I had an email from Quidco about my recent BHS purchase. They've had to decline the cashback, in view of BHS's current situation, as they feel they won't get paid their commission. Disappointing, but I can understand why.
Oh, the cushions I was 'considering' for the spare room have now been ordered.Early retired - 18th December 2014
