Quite a bit of progress this morning.

Washing washed in machine, no sign of any water under the machine. will continue to monitor.

Washing dried on line, will fetch it in shortly, as rain is forecast

As Mr Goldie is home today, got him to shift furniture around, so I could vacuum behind the sofas etc.

Even though it's his day off, he then got on with some office work, as they are busy at present. They don't get paid overtime, but he will claim the time as time off in lieu.

So I got on with photographing the clothes my friend passed to me yesterday for eBaying. I've got about 20 things to sell, plus a few bits of my own. A FLW for the bank holiday would be welcome, as I'd like to do most of it before my holiday.

I've been pondering something my friend said yesterday.

I was telling her abut some of the things I've been doing, like the batch cooking and bread making, and general plans from next year for days out and packed lunches for days out on any coach trips we might do. Plus growing some vegetables etc, etc

She said, jokingly ( I hope) that I was getting old before my time!

I don't think that's true, all I want to do is to live fairly simply, in a reasonably economic way from day to day, and to see more of my local area, this country in general, not to mention the world, in an affordable way.

I don't think that's something just for 'old' people. I think people of all ages like to do things like this.

Just feel a bit disappointed in a way, as we've always been on the same page about things before.

I think, spending time on this board with like minded people, I've forgotten that not everybody has the same mind set.

Anyway, I think I'll prep a few eBay listings, ready for the weekend. I will get off the eBay treadmill one day!

    ^ ^ ^ Do not worry about this ^ ^ ^ have a [hug] instead!

I think your friend's just getting confused because the methods we're using on here are mainly old-style ... it doesn't make you old to be using them, any more than it makes my 17 year old stepdaughter "old" because she's into vintage clothes and making some herself!

It just makes you savvy! Nowt old about that! x

PS: hope the ears are holding up!

Here follows a heartfelt blether that is long overdue :T

I've really enjoyed reading the diaries of MFWs who have transitioned to wanting to retire early. It's a healthy and sensible decision that shows that you value your life energy and the time you have left over the 'easy' choices that sap your future wealth for little real benefit.

I was sat the other day thinking 'I can really relate to Goldiegirl and Secret Saving Squirrel, they seem really driven, with great plans that they're putting into action'.

Being 'old before your time' is a badge of honour these days. It sounds like your friend is experiencing a bit of cognitive dissonance - I suspect that she knows full well that you're doing the right thing - but has too many fears or ties to follow suit.

Living intentionally is no bad thing.

I'm 31 and can tick off many of the actions and dreams that you have on your lists. I'm not claiming to be a young hipster, but I'm also not an old man. I want to spend time with those I love, I want to expand my knowledge and horizons, I would like to be a bit more self-sufficient. At the same time, I'm not willing to do it at the expense of the planet or my health.

Keep doing what you're doing if it works for you. Your real friends willl see the value of your choices in time. If not, just remember that it's almost impossible to change peoples minds for them!

Thank you so much, that's a lovely thing to say, and makes me feel that I'm on the right track. I think you are a savvy lad, who's got his head screwed on and is far more focussed than I was at your age, So for you to relate to me - I am completely delighted about that!

Hab - I seem to be better in a quiet atmosphere, and as I've been at home and quite busy today, I haven't noticed my ear much at all, just a light hiss really. Back to work tomorrow. We are in an open plan office, so there is always back ground noise. People forget to speak up, so I'm always asking them to repeat themselves:o

Friends come and go. Some are appropriate to a particular time and some stay for life.

So true. Also reminded me of this oldie but goodie:

Friends are like knickers....Some crawl up your ar5e......Some snap under pressure...Some don't have the strength to hold you up...Some get a little twisted...Some are your favourite...Some are holey...Some are cheap and just plain nasty...And the good ones actually do cover your ar5e when you need them to

She would cover my ar5e if needed, she's a good friend.

I think I have been spending so much time on MFW, I forgot that in the general population, we are in the minority with the things we do !

Anyway, work today, so there's nothing much to report, with tomorrow having the potential to be hideous.

    what joy work is !

Apologies for keeping the two above posts together but they felt significant to me.

Mr E is a switched on, sensible chap who has a clear direction. He's doing similar stuff perhaps driven by different things due to age - but the steps in the journey are similar, just potentially a different outcome, again age related.

Goldie, you come across as someone eminently sensible and practical with a clear view of what you want to achieve. I'm heading for 51, not sure of your age but I'm having the same thoughts as you, albeit you are already MF - if I'm remembering correctly.

I have given up chatting to any of my RL friends about this stuff because without exception, not one of them 'gets it'. Doesn't mean we don't socialise, we do, but I keep my personal drivers to myself now.

I certainly don't think any of this is down to being old. Being frugal was important when I was growing up and I know my friends parents were in the same boat. I think Habibiboo has it spot on, it's living an Old Style life. I can tell you with 100% confidence that I (and my family) are happier living this lifestyle than spending money like it was water as we did previously. Everything has a real value including going to the park, sitting on a bench, with a glass of wine and watching the sunset - and yes Mr T and I do that occasionally.

Apologies for rabbiting on but I'm catching up on diaries and your post compelled me to write.

    Best wishes, Tilly

I'm a little bit older than you Tilly - I was 54 a couple of months ago, and yes, I am mortgage free now.

I was thinking about my friend's comment at lunch time. I am sure it was said jokingly, but like you say, I think it's probably best not to say too much about my old style activities in future to people in RL. It's a slightly alternative lifestyle, and people tend to remark on things that they perceive as unusual. From now on, I won't be so open on this subject. It's quite personal really, so I'll think it'll be something I'll be private about

When I was a child, my parents didn't have much money. As a young couple they did all the things I've now adopted, and much more. My mum made most of her clothes and mine - my dad just didn't have new clothes. He got a blazer when the war ended, and was content with it - he was still wearing it into the 2000's! But all I can ever remember is a happy childhood.

I feel much more content these days. It seems satisfying to take pleasure in simple things.

Frankly, I wish I'd done this years ago.
