Oh wow to the deccies!

I'm glad Spectre has come out, Skyfall is really plummeting in price on Amazon2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
Skyfall was good - it revealed things we didn't know before
I've written out most of my Christmas cards today. This is the earliest I've ever done them. Just want to get it out of the way. I like getting cards but hate writing them. Only about 5 more to do.
We did the normal weekly shopping this morning. Already the supermarket was busier than normal. I think it was all the older people 'getting things done before it gets busy', but they just succeeded in making the place crowded!Early retired - 18th December 2014

'Scrabbling' sounds were heard in the loft last night, and this morning one of the mousetraps had an occupant:eek:
I think it must have been a new arrival, as it's been clear up there for several days.
We've added another line of defence, we found a new battery for the 'sonic' mouse deterrent, and we've sent away for a plug in sonic deterrent, for 'whole house protection'
We'll also have to try and get any obvious holes blocked up
It's annoying, as I thought this was a one off problem:mad:
We had our first Christmas card through the post yesterday. It was from someone Mr Goldie worked with some years ago. Unfortunately, his wife has died. I don't think she could have been any more than 70, if that.
About 20 years ago, this couple, another couple and us two used to have BBQ's at each other's houses. The husband of the other couple died about 10 years ago, so out of the three couples it's only us who are both still in the land of the living.
It brings it home how short life is, and how important it is not to put things off for too long.Early retired - 18th December 2014

Oh my word. That must be a real shock - even hearing about friends of friends of friends can make you think, but when they're close like this, its a shocker.
And I'm sorry to hear there was more scrabbling! Yuck. Hope the new precautions also help.2023: the year I get to buy a car0 -
No more scrabbling has been heard, and the traps were clear again this morning. We'll continue to keep watching
We went for a long walk this morning. It's great to take advantage of sunny days this late in the yearEarly retired - 18th December 2014

The mousetraps are still clear and we now have the new sonic device in place, or the Mouseblaster 3000 as I like to call it
We're feeling hopeful that the situation has been resolved
The annual renewal for the washing machine repair insurance came through today. £101.25
This washing machine is now 10 years old, and we're just waiting for it to go wrong, and then we'll get another one, so there's no way we're renewing this time.
I won't be falling into the trap of getting a new policy with any new machine either. I think we've called out the engineer twice in 10 years, so it's been useful..... but I'm sure the engineer's bills would have been nowhere near what we've paid out on the policy - what we've paid would include the cost of a new machine
Next time, we're 'self insuring' - I think the only reason we kept paying for the policy every year was the superstition that it's go wrong the moment we stopped paying!
This morning we did the Christmas 'goodies' shopping from Sainsburys. Bearing in mind it's just the two of us, and our turkey and veg have been ordered from M&S, we still managed to spend £60, which I find a bit alarming. But at least we used Nectar points so it was 'free'.
We're sorted for Christmas now. We only buy presents for one set of friends, and we've bought each other a token present. But we'll got out on Boxing Day to have a splurge in the sales, and get things we want then. At 9am on Boxing Day at our local M&S it's lovely and quiet - it's quite a relaxing experience!
We've booked an activity for next summer. We're going to big athletics meeting at the Olympic Stadium, next July. My ticket was £54.25, but Mr Goldie only cost £33.25 as an over 60. We thought it'd be a different thing to doEarly retired - 18th December 2014

Re. annual renewal - that would have covered you for a year?!
Pretty sure I saw A+ washing machines advertised during colour themed spending day in the region of £300.
I have never been able to bring myself to insure individual items like this.0 -
Hi Goldie
Just catching up.
Brill use of vouchers.
Sorry about your mouse problem. We are fortunate this year that having moved, the cat hasn't gone out to catch any mice or rats - she has a fondness of bringing live ones in and then we have to dispose of them (which is not pleasant).
I notice that it will be your one year anniversary of being retired soon - hasn't that flown by!

Just catching up. A whole year has really flown as MissCousinitt says! That washing machine cover was really expensive - we paid that for 10 year cover on our dishwasher. We've had it 5 years and they have only been out once so we thought it was a 'good deal' as the call out was £70 and our policy covers us for parts as well.
Hope you get mice sorted soon, I remember a pest control friend of Mr Watty saying that they come inside at this time of year because it is so cold and wet outside so if you have them coming in, they will probably continue to do so (sorry) so worth leaving traps down.Made it to mortgage free but what a muddle that became
In the event the proverbial hits the fan then co-habitees are better stashing their cash than being mortgage free !!0 -
Yes, that year has flown by. The news about your friend brings it home. We too have lost friends unexpectedly at what we feel is a young age. Certainly. Brings it home that it is worth retiring early.
Well done on being all prepared for Christmas.
Squirrel xPaid off mortgage nine years early in 2013. Now picking and choosing our work to fit in with the rest of our lives!
Still thrifty though, after all these years:D0
