I've had a response from Newcastle about my request saying I've no idea how to setup a DD to this account. There response was "It's not possible on this account. Funding is by standing order and faster payments only."

That's confusing, because on both my HomeSaver and the Homesaver ISA my linked current ac shows up as an option in the drop down menu. I have a DD to both starting next week.

if I click on "Make a transaction", the only accounts I can choose for the "from" is the Newcastle accounts.
are you sure your nominated account has the DD set up ok? My DD had been deleted by my current account provider since it had not been used in a long time. The current account did still show in my Newcastle online banking as a nominated account but it did no longer appear as an account to move money from or to.

I then registered a different nominated account and once they had confirmed the change (which took half an eternity and involved sending letters...), I can now make transactions against that nominated account, from all my Newcastle accounts. I only have the non-ISA version of the BHS account though. The DD also shows in the current account that I registered with Newcastle.

You get a letter with your username on, then it doesn't accept your password and asks you to type it in all upper case, then it rejects that and asks you for memorable information to reset your password, then you can change it back to what you entered on the application form and it works the second time around. Very strange behaviour.
I had a similar thing happening for a while - got constantly locked out and needed to reset my password at least half a dozen times in a row. Luckily this seems to have stopped now.

Managed to log on fine with my account, but OH got locked out. Went through exactly the same process for both, so will now have to ring to unlock it. Seems an extremely stupid set up.

I think we need to put down that the Newcastle is just plain weird with regards to most things.

I found out today that there's a email form them in my Spam folder, which contains a DD PDF attachment. However, the savings account number is partly filled in, starting 'INV'. Now my savings account starts with 'DFE', so I don't think I can use this DD letter...

They do say however that the 'Sir Bobby Robson Foundation Saver' supports DDs, so I've applied for one of these. Who knows, when this account is created, maybe I can do DDs to my BHS account. I tried to open this account whilst logged in, but it would only allow the funding from an existing Newcastle account, I had to open it whilst logged off to be able to fund it from an external source(!).

Just to stick up for Newcastle BS.... I've been a customer for years and I would highly recommend them. Once you get over the niggles with the online banking, I'm sure all will be fine. The customer service is great. I work for a bank, which IMHO has rubbish customer service, Newcastle BS have been great in my opinion. So I'd suggest giving them a chance guys, they are probably just swamped with everyone opening these accounts! Plus it's bank holiday too.

As for the big DD debate, you definitely can use a DD to fund a BHS account.... I have the non-ISA version, and my girlfriend has the ISA version, and we both fund via DD. However we do both have other accounts with Newcastle also, so maybe that's why we get the option.

Just to clarify.... to set up a DD, you must choose the option if prompted at account opening to set up a 'linked account', if you don't do it at that point - you can set one up later, but it's a paper based process. Also be aware that it takes up to 2 weeks to set up a DD, so those of you who have just opened accounts may find a DD suddenly appears on your current account.

Would agree with you, it's all a bit quaint. But once you have it all set up, it seems to work like clockwork, and paying in is incredibly flexible.

I never bothered with any DD form (not that I have ever seen any). I think the "secret" lies in how your nominated account is set up, and whether it has a valid DD mandate attached to it.

That is the one I originally had, but the DD mandate had been deleted by my current account provider since it had not been used in 13+ months.

as above - - do you have a DD showing at your nominated account?

I opened an account with £500 on 2nd April, and set up a SO for £500 payments as from 4th May, but having read through recent posts, am I right in thinking I can top-up the initial payment with another £750 this month (and is it acceptable to do that by 'Faster Payments' from my linked account?) .

Also, as the first Standing Order's not yet been sent, presumably I'm ok to just adjust the figure up to £1250 pm?

    Many thanks for any help...
