If you've given them your meter readings and you've paid a DD to your new company, the old tariff can be what it likes. As far as I'm concerned the old company can't charge me for anything after that time. I've taken that attitude every time I've switched and I've never had a problem. All you need to do is to insist that you won't pay the old company a penny that relates to either gas or electricity used after the meter readings. Being assertive isn't difficult.[/QUOTE]

All very well if your final readings are correctly passed on.
You may give your readings but they don`t always correspond.

If either company wants to be funny about meter readings, just stand your ground. In my experience it's always the company that you've switched from that try it on with higher readings than are valid. Just because you're dealing with big national or international companies you don't have to tolerate being pushed around.
  • My switch date was 15th May.

Received final bill from Npower on 5th June (correct closing meter readings and final payment, of outstanding balance, to be taken on 1st July - last regular monthly payment was taken on 1st May).

Received first bill from Ovo 18th June (correct opening meter readings and one months worth of online only £60 annual discount).

My Ovo switch timelines weren't always shown correctly and opening gas meter reading disappeared at one point for about a week, account said switch still going on when it had already completed - so generally a bit of a back and forth inaccurate mess, but I left it be and it sorted itself out, and has been perfect the last 2 weeks.

Happy switcher - happy Npower customer - happy Ovo customer :)

Been there and got the scars to show for it. My understanding is that it is the responsibility of the gaining supplier to calculate opening/final readings which then go a 3rd party before being passed to the losing supplier. The losing supplier has the right to dispute these readings and back around the loop the parties go. In my case, the losing supplier just prepared a manual final bill based on its estimates. It wasn't helped by them telling me that the readings couldn't be wrong as they were given them!!

    "

Your new supplier asks YOU for the readings.
They then pass them on to a third party to evaluate, who then passes them on to your old supplier.

Most people have no problems with a switch but there`s a whole lot, through no fault of their own, that do.
You must have been lucky, nothing to do with being "assertive".
You can rant and rave on the phone until you`re blue in the face and they`ll take no notice of you, probably hang up on you.
You give the readings to your new supplier and it`s then out of your hands.

Never, ever had to rant and rave, as you say it doesn't get you anywhere. It's just a case of not giving up when companies tell you they know better than you what your figures are. Puts me in mind of when I moved into a place in 1998. I gave both meter readings to the existing supplier and didn't see the need to change to another company. They then didn't send me a bill for 15 months (only when I realised I hadn't had one and contacted them), and when they did, it included costs for fuel prior to the date I moved in. I proved to them via my rent agreement what date I'd accept as the start date that I would accept liability for. When they started to get stroppy about wanting 15 months worth of fuel costs within 2 weeks they got told that I was entitled to take as long to pay it as they had taken to produce a bill (in fact I paid it all within 3 months). I also got the bill reduced by £30 because I claimed that as I'd had no bill, I wasn't able to compare their prices with other suppliers, therefore I hadn't been able to switch to lower tariffs (either theirs or someone else's). It sure is fun when you know you're right.
