Again, you're missing the point. A lot of people arent that badge concious or feel a "desire" towards a car that they "must have" a big brand car.

Or worse still, buying a car with the same name as a cheap mint.

Personally, I've always liked the sound of the Volkswagen Toerag, Tiguan's big throw-his-weight around brother.

    Thanks everyone for their views.

While I agree with most here that If I had £15k to spend on a motor (and thats a big and unlikely IF), its not what i would be putting my money on, it sort of confirms that in 3 years or so, there should be some around which represent good value as a largish, resonably new, diesel people mover.

All of which is subject to there not being some terrible problem discovered with them, such as terrible rust etc.

Personally, i'm not really fussed what others think of my method of transport, so this may help if there are still some serious snobbery about the badge, but i equally respect others views that they are a pile of odd parts, no good waste of money etc.

I think there are cases for and against Dacia.

Take the Duster for example. The base spec costs £9,495. That is cheap for a brand new car. If you have kids, a dog, a caravan etc, its fantastic. You can run it into the ground over a period of 6/7 years, and when you work out the costs (even taking into account depreciation), its pretty darn cheap motoring.
Once you start speccing them up though, it does get a bit pricey and there are better alternatives available.

I was at Caen not so long ago waiting for a ferry, and there was a well specced up Duster parked next to me. The owner let me have a good look around and I was impressed.

Same with the Sandero, £5,995 for the base spec. Its an ideal town car. Sure its a bit tinny and underpowered, but its not really meant for powering up and down the motorway every day. Its meant for tootling round town in the traffic. At £5,995, buy it, run it for 5 years and flog it for a grand. Again, once the costs are added up, its pretty much disposable motoring.

The only way the Dacia's make sense to me is in base spec and running them into the ground.

For a Caravan you really need the diesel 4x4 version (1500kg towing capacity instead of 1200kg), but on every other point I agree with you. The amount of space it provides is great for the money, and from poking around at one (no test drive yet) it feels pretty decent.

And even if it's not the best in class, I'm sure it still compares favourably to most 10 other cars in it's price band.

The guy follows me around making comments. It's never me who makes the first comment. Just thought I'd put that to you.

Just a suggestion then, do not reply to him it is giving him ammunition, no one will be bothered I feel sure.
  • Cars are all about resale value. If you bought the Dacia for £15k and ran it till it fell apart, then it would be relatively cheap. Given that it is not sold on its quality or reliability, I would guess after 5 years it will be worth a couple of grand and be starting to wear out and break down. As a guess, that's £250 - £300 a month you'll spend, is that too much ?

The issue with buying new is the amount of money you lose immediately buying a new car. How much is a 6 month old, ex-demo dacia for instance ? Possibly 2 or 3k cheaper already.

There are probably 3 ranges of cars in the UK, premium, standard and budget. So for £15k think New Dacia, 2-3 year old Ford, 4-5 Year old Audi - just a rough guide.

So which would you prefer ? At the end of the day it's a personal judgement value. As can be seen already on this thread some people put a lot of their personal pride and identity in what car they drive.
If you are happy with it, buy one.

Personally I have an 11 year old Avensis, which I bought outright 6 years ago for £5.5k, it's worth about a grand now but won't drop it's resale value any more, so I won't lose any more money on it. That's how I buy cars, older ones that are comfy, quick and reliable.
Other people prefer newer as they like to have something to show for their money.
So apart from buying brand new which always loses you money unless you never sell it, buy the car you want and can afford.

what has been said is good advice. However the £15,000 fig would be as low as £11,000 - 4x2 mid range Duster £12,500 4x4 mid range Duster. (all delivery mileage) and up to 7 years warranty.

No one piece of advice can be seen to be right unless you tailor it ...... If you intend to keep your car for a long time, if you intend to trade up after 2/3 years ......

Listen to all the good advice and select what is appropriate
