Another nice thing about the Tuenti SIM is that it remains valid indefinitely, provided that you have a balance deduction every six months, e.g. a roaming SMS. This means that you can keep any residual balance and your mobile number for future trips to Spain.

Have to say that both my Carrefour and Orange SIMs were live nearly a year later with no usage at all.
I didn't expect that so i bought another Carrefour SIM for 9€ and now I have two Carrefour SIMs. Can't complain though as the gave me a free and unlocked mobile broadband USB modem as part of the 9€ package. Apparently a 40€ discount.

I recently ordered a VODAFONE YU SMART 8 SIM from http://www.simcardspain.es/en/118-vodafone-yu-smart-8-12-16-spanish-payg-prepaid-3g-data-sim-card-internet-for-spain.html and it arrived in the UK within a few days.

Other details here: https://www.vodafone.es/particulares/es/moviles/tarifas/movil-prepago/hablar-y-navegar/ (use Google translate or suchlike).

All packed up with activation and APN details ready to go next week.

Yes you can. Just switch the airplane mode on. Do it while you are in UK and keep it that way while you are abroad. Otherwise call your network and disable voicemail on their side as well: Mobile Roaming

Then you can enable WiFi if you wish. Also, receiving texts is free even abroad. You can just switch mobile data off and not answer the calls.

If you want to use any free of charge communication (e.g. wifi), remove the SIM instead of using the aeroplane mode. You should then find that iMessage still works so you can send texts to other iPhones free of charge while connected to wifi.

Plane mode turns off normal phone function - for when flying and want to listen to music....

Go into settings Cellular, and (On ios 7) ensure Cellular data, enable 3g and Data Roaming are Turned off..

You could also select all the apps, and turn off cellular data for those - just to be double sure..

as Orange seem to be on of the worst on here for roaming charges...

Always ensure voicemail is disabled, that way if anyone calls you, you aren't picking up the international charge for them to leave a message..

Where do you see "cellular data"? This doesn't appear on my iPhone. Do you have your language set to US English?

Not any more. £1 for 20MB and £3 for 100MB are the most competitive EEA data roaming bundles of any UK network. Outside the EEA, Orange charges £8,000 per gigabyte but that's another story.

Charges for this have been outlawed within the EEA since 1st July 2010. In any case, if the OP removes the SIM card, there will be no international diversion, as the network won't see the SIM card as being in Spain.

On IOS 7, Settings (Listed after Airplane Mode, Wifi & Bluetooth & Before Personal Hotspot & Carrier Settings), click Cellular, then it lists Cellular Data, Enable 3G, Data Roaming. All set to English \ United Kingdom on the international settings

My phone was bought directly from the Apple Shop and is running 7.0.2 - to avoid the glitch around the lock screen \ photo browser...
