Proposing without a Ring - alternatives?

Thanks for all the advice - the pendant idea has been shelved. Maybe I will just propose without the ring or delay asking until I get a better idea on the style of ring.0

Friend recently got engaged, bf took her shopping to a jewellers under pretext of choosing earings for his sisters birthday, then asked her what she thought of a ring and when she said she prefered the one next to it he proposed (down on one knee) and they went in and bought the ring she prefered.0

...Call me old fashioned, but I just like the idea of proposing to the gf the "old fashioned" way, ring in hand...I think it means more if you've chosen it yourself and, tbh, I think that if you're going to marry someone you should know them well enough to know, at least, what sort of ring they'd like...I know exactly what the gf would like and I'm a fair way from proposing yet...0

Have you tried asking her best mate? But, can she keep her mouth shut about it and does she have an good (excellent) idea of the ring that your GF wants?
Cos lets face it, if she feels the same way about you, she is BOUND to have discussed this with her best mate about what she wants.
Only go with best mates feelings though if A) - Best Mate actually likes you too. and
she really really does have a definate idea of what GF wants.
If you cannot get this info from her, then the Jewellry quarter, lunch maybe overnight stop over and the propsoal idea without anything would be a great idea.0 -

Do you have any idea how difficult it is for us girls to pretend we like your choices just so that we won't hurt your feelings? :rotfl:Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three times and I'll smash your face in.

*sigh*
My EX Fiancee bought my engagement ring from ebay, with my ebay account, for £30......The ring itself had been sold previously THREE times due to failed relationships then folk putting it back on ebay. I always dreamed of a specific style, and vocalised this to him alot before he bought the ring.
So, my ring came delivered in an argos jewlery box, was then a 4th hand item, pretty ghastly design (I almost cried) and the swine used my ebay account to bid and pay for it! I wasn't allowed to use my account for almost a month whilst he plucked up the courage to propose. No bloomin wonder! If I'd seen that auction I'd have told him to sling his hook!
Btw, the ring was made a 5th hand item over two years ago when we split and I offered up the ring for sale on ebay....With a cursed warning attached!!Debt free since 2014 - now saving for a mortgage deposit :heart2:
This time I'm on top of it! We live and learn :coffee:0 -
Why not write a specially bought card with a date and time in it to meet at a jewellers of her choice so she can "pick the engagement ring of her dreams so that you can spend the rest of your life with the women of your dreams" and just pop in the card a single red rose.
Good luck!!0 -

thats a great idea. I let my hubbie choose mine (I knew he was doing it as he asked my ring size - not very subtle!) and ended up with what would normally be an eternity style ring. But I love it so don't care! I thought he was going to do it on Christmas day so at least it was a surprise when he booked a meal on the 23rd.....and got down on one knee just as we were about to go out the door! He had planned to do it at the restaurant but didn't want everyone watching and said the bulge of the ring box was too obvious in his trousers :rotfl:0 -

lol you reckon you know, you may hope she doesn't change her mind between now and then

Depending on your intended's sense of humour, why not propose with one of those rings that you can either get in little girl's dressing up kits or those big (rubber?) flowery rings that you can buy in newsagents?
