Proposing without a Ring - alternatives?

Hi,
I am wishing to propose to my girlfriend but think that getting a ring may be a bad idea because I am still unsure on style and also due to wanting to propose when away returns policies from the jewellers will not be valid.
What are peoples thoughts on proposing but with a diamond pendant instead? I know it may seem a little daft - I just don't want to get the ring wrong as it will be worn for the rest of her life.
But feel proposing without a ring may not feel as special
Any suggestions/views?

Perhaps a box and you could let her choose her own ring?

overdraft was 1500 now 1360 must try harder.
loan was 13705.24 now 9791.62 due to be paid off 01/02/2011 but gonna aim for 01/05/2009!!
amex cc was 4210 now 3650.48 lobt at 4.9% due to be paid off in 01/02/08
total owed was £19415.24 now its £14802.10 going down!!!:money:
I am proud to be dealing with my debt!

I'd go with something big and sparkly, but made from cubic zirconia and gold plate- so it looks the part but lets her choose her own style, or if she wants the one you chose, then buy her a 'proper' one the same style.
