Proposing without a Ring - alternatives?

I recently proposed with a 'fake ring'.. i knew her ring size and went to a local jewellers. I bought a pretty white gold ring that was only £35, it had a cubic zirconian stone that looks about .5 carat. She wears to work rather than the 'real' one (far bigger and WAY more expensive)0

We chose our ring after DH had proposed, I really didn't expect him to propose WITH a ring (although I was expecting him to propose!)
If he'd thought of buying a pendant, that would have been a nice touch, although his taste in rings is better ... and he couldn't afford both a pendant and a ring at the time.Signature removed for peace of mind0 -
We went shopping for the ring after hubby proposed and to my mind thats by far the best way: most girls have a specific style in mind and you don't want to get it wrong!.
Hubby didn't buy me anything else as a substitute at the time and personally I don't like the idea, I can't really say why...it just doesn't feel right to me. I'd suggest buying a nice bottle of bubbly instead to celebrate her saying yes

Hi when my bf proposed he didnt have a ring either due to exactly the same reasons as you have said.
I really didnt mind and i am sooooooo glad i chose the ring as he told me he would have got something totally different!
I am sure that if you explain that to her she will understand.
My bf booked a nice hotel near the jewellery quarter, we also went for a nice meal and then got the ring the next day.
You could do something similar?
Good luck and congratulations in advance.
totally agree with vampgirl!0 -

I proposed without a ring. We then chose the ring together afterwards.
We celebrate our 25th anniversary in September.

I agree- the pendant just doesn't hit the right buttons for me- choose the right spot aswell-
with a bot of thought you can manage something a bit romantic-hubby proposed to me in the dark on one knee,in a drunken state after we'd already booked the wedding:oMember of the first Mortgage Free in 3 challenge, no.19
Balance 19th April '07 = minus £27,640
Balance 1st November '09 = mortgage paid off with £1903 left over. Title deeds are now ours.0 -
If my husband had proposed with a fake ring or a pendant I would have been confused and disappointed. It would have ruined the moment for me, espcially when he would have to explain quickly at a pivotal point in the proposal why he chose to do it.
I say propose without the ring and offer to have a special shopping trip where you can pick something together. She'll probably love the idea of going shopping for such an important piece of jewellery."carpe that diem"0 -
propose then when she's said yes go out shopping together - make a day of it and go to one of the jewellery quarters and have a nice lunch etc as well. You don't need to have something to give her at the time.0
