This argument does not make logical sense.

They are already increasing Platinum from 2,000 to 2,400 points. However, at the same time they are taking away the category limits. I have usually exceeded many of category limits half way through my policy year, yet under the new rules I will continue to collect points all year through.

Also, if it is screening that they want to encourage - why (even as Platinum) have Full Health Screens increased from £25 to £55 and now we are told that it will be a maximum of 50% costing around £250.

Phone the screening company direct to check. I just called Nuffield and they told me a Vi6 screen for a male (usually £590) was still £75. Maybe worth getting if you're in as bad a shape as I am .

One thing you can always do at the end of your term is try and bargain with the gym to keep your membership the same. I'm sure they will be flexible at the end of the month - I once got 15 day passes for £40 as I wanted to bridge the gap between my old gym and the new Virgin/Pruhealth one. All they can say is no and you might not even need unnecessary health insurance.
  • Yes, received my letter today outlining the removal of incentives to customers to stay in shape. I'm sure the clubs and associated businesses are feeling the pinch and elected to deny Pru the great terms we have all enjoyed. Business is business and as I'm sure many health clubs have lost truckloads of customers due to the recession, this will ensure they lose many more. I would be surprised if any wise money savers choose to continue with them now. Watch the race to the exits! Its just a shame that such a good initiative has been shelved. I'll miss the gym, but hey - its been a great two years - I'll be getting the wii fit out and running and cycling outdoors instead. brrrrr humbug ye ebaneza pruge

Damn - yeah didn't think about the Wii... Didn't see the point getting one what with having the gym membership before but now its a maybe just to get the motivation/fun levels up (can't imagine my bedroom press ups will last long!).

Maybe this is all a Nintendo conspiracy to get us back out the gym!

  • Been on the phone and had some frank emails from some people at Pru. All the staff are pretty annoyed off with the changes. I have even been told now, once I have to start paying gym, its going to be a whacking £73 a person, and then with the 25% discount, its still cheaper to go direct to the gym.

hang on... the gym hasn't 'gone', the Ts & Cs are now just different. Yes its not as cheap as it was if you're on Gold or Platinum, but it's still there and 25% cheaper than you can get if you just walk in off the high street... that's 25% less than if you're with another insurer too!

Why splash out over £100 on a wii fit when a Fitbug is £30? I'm an avid Pru fan and get most of my points using the fitbug, yes running and cycling outdoors like you're intending to do. And it's paid for itself through cash back I got last year for not claiming.

So yes the gym is changing (not being removed!) but there's still the incentive and it's still not hard to get your status up :T

Thank you, Mrs Pru Share-Holder. I could buy a Wii fit every month with the amount my gym membership will increase by (albeit come November next year). Plus if you go in and speak to the gym themselves chances are you could get it cheaper anyway, without the health insurance. You obviously don't have an issue with that but for me it makes it completely unworthwhile.

QUIDCO £2827 paid out since October 2007:D
  • I got a very short letter from Pru the other day saying that from my renewal date the gym prices would be changing to the flat 25% discount however it said nothing about the removal of the 100% discount from the price of the health insurance... has anyone got any information about this because from what I had read previously it seemed like this was being removed as well which seemed like them breaking their own terms as they had promised that you would get that discount if you reached platinum status. I will definately be cancelling the gym in March due to the new prices I'm just trying to work out if it is worth me keeping the health insurance on for another year if it stays around £3/4 a month as I can still enjoy the cheap cineworld card and thinking about going on the eurostar as well.

Hmmm...don't you realise that many Nuffield gyms are MATCHING the 25% discount and you won't need to have some expensive insurance policy to get that discount? In fact I've been offered a better deal by my local Nuffield - they said that when the new T&Cs come into effect they will give me full membership for the price of the 50+ one. Still nowhere near as cheap as what Pru currently offer but I won't need to keep paying this pointless medical insurance which I'll never use.

Why are you and 'avid Pru fan'? Surely you must be at least considering cancelling now its no longer a good deal?

Unfortnately I think you've been rumbled Mr/Mrs Pru!

I am an avid Pru fan as they covered a very expensive operation on my knee recently, and the service I received was second to none (given that I have experienced 3 previous insurers, the experience of claiming from Pru was far easier). Afterall, that's why I (and most people!) have health insurance. Yes the gym is a nice to have, but it's not the reason why I like most who have private healthcare have chosen to take a policy out. If you get cheaper gym elsewhere, fine, but as a health insurer I think Pru are great and if you are active in any way at all it's just a bonus. :j

I get your point but I sure many, many policy holders have been paying for this service with Pruhealth with no intention of ever claiming (myself included, I have a separate policy with another insurer for this purpose).

I just have the policy for the gym membership alone and its customers like me that Pruhealth are going to lose, and I expect that will run into thousands.
