Not a sob story, but I lost my mum and dad when fairly young. I do use this day, to treat my great aunt who has always been like a mother to me and is a total gran to my 2. And also send cards and flowers to my actual gran (as her son, my dad is not around to do so), to show her she is still very much loved & appreciated xxx
I love this board, have "virtually" met so many lovely people, people I am honoured to count as friends.

  • I do buy my mum things through the year, like surprise delivery of flowers for no reason at all only to brighten her day, but I do like mothers day - yes its more commercialised than it used to be, but then isn't EVERYTHING nowadays?
Mothering Sunday/ Mothers day goes back centuries doesn't it? although I suspect people just made something nice back then rather than buying something but even so - a day devoted to showing appreciation for your mother isn't a bad thing - well I don't think it is anyway! its just a set day to specifically mark it and spend a nice day together which has been going on for oodles of years- rebelling against it and refusing to acknowledge it is a bit mean spirited in my opinion - its like saying you shouldn't mark your birthday - once you are born you are born, just forget about it after that! :rotfl:
maybe everyone should have their own mothers day on their birthday where they thank their mums for giving birth to them on that day instead lol
For the person (sorry cant remember who it was now!) whose husband wont acknowledge it with their children - I think that's sad :(

I always get my mum something for mother's day. Nothing flashy, just something that will put a smile on her face. This year it's some edible treats.

I agree, but if someone displays a :(, then they are not happy at the decision and would perhaps rather have the giving.

It is personal choice. I would celebrate with my mam were she still alive, as well as acknowledging her throughout the year.

Yes, someone made up the day, and yes, it has become a business earner, but it is an acknowledgement that some mothers would like to be a part of, and if that is what they would like, there is no reason to deny them their wish, I believe.

I do acknowledge that it is personal choice though. I will remember my mam in church on Sunday.

None taken, robbies_gal. I see your point too and also hope my response was not offensive as that was not my intention :)
