Be it 1.5%, 3% or 4% these are all risible, especially the capping at £2000, goodness me the £5k cap was bad enough.
And then having to go through the stooopid hoops with the rotating of £1k or £1.5k monthly and then having to have a number of DDs.
It's called being attractive enough to get people to move their banking to you, whilst being unattractive enough to prevent swarms of people opening account for the sole reason of using it as a savings account.Any political party who could sort it out properly would get my vote.
Oh, they could sort it out, but it wouldn't be any better for the vast majority of us, in fact, I'd expect it to be worse.
Remember that the government doesn't want you to have savings. They want you to spend spend spend. Spending money helps the economy, which means more taxes collected. If everyone refused to spend money, they'd just take your money directly from your bank account like has happened in other countries already.0 -

Banking these days is a real joke.

These 'stupid hoops' are to try to force people to use it as a current account (ie have salary go in and payments coming out) rather than as a savings account.
Why should banks chase savers anyway? Chasing savers with huge interest rates is a really stupid move business wise.DEBT FREE!

Everybody in the UK can open an ISA, or have one opened for them if they are a minor (leaving aside a minor issue over CTFs, to be eliminated in April 2015). This has been so for the best part of 15 years, so different denominations of governments have been involved, and ISAs were originally introduced by Tony Blair's Labour government.
Are you saying that was a 'sop story to Labour party voters'?And would you rather have seen no increase, or a decrease, in this year's ISA allowance?
I don't really get how different political parties come into it.
(Apologies, forumites, about the deviation into ISAs....it's just because Hominu said "... the government doesn't want you to have savings")0
