Catford

I used to live round the corner from there so I still look at right move. That seems like it's far too expensive. It's nicely decorated but I wouldn't have thought a house of that size in that area had gone over the 400k mark yet!
I coped with living in Catford. I got home from work and locked the door and didn't leave until the next day! Transport links were very good though.
I looked at Hither Green when we moved and it seemed much nicer and quieter. Didn't end up there though as I chose another delightfully grotty corner of South London.0 -
I lived in Catford in the early years of my marriage in rented property, although we were at the part that is closest to Hither Green & that was our local station. I never thought much of Catford itself then & think even less of it now.
It's on the short list of the places I'd never want to buy a house in in SE London, & those places are New Cross, Catford & Peckham.
There are some lovely spacious houses in Catford, built by a builder called Corbett, but he built on land in part a few areas in SE London & it's suburbs, so if this is the type of house you're looking for, look a little further afield.
I see some people are recommending Hither Green, but think you'll find it's pretty pricey now as it's definitely a step up from Catford. The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.
I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.0 -
Thanks for the info everyone..wish I could pick that house up and move it elsewhere, but then it'd probably be another 200k!
I live in West Norwood which had a terrible rep for years. Now all of a sudden a load of money is being spent on improving the area, and house prices have shot through the roof.
We have been totally priced out of buying a house. A modest 3 bed Victorian semi opposite us (nowhere near as nice as that one in Catford) sold in a day for £745k
So it doesn't matter that our property has gone up massively as everything else has too.
I see us quitting London to be honest i just need to be brave enough seeing as I'm born and bred and know that once we leave, we'll not be able to afford to come back.Metranil dreams of becoming a neon,You don't even take him seriously,How am I going to get to heaven?,When I'm just balanced so precariously..0 -
One of the reasons I disliked Catford was the people and how rude they were. You could be queuing in Tesco and someone would just start an alternative queue to push in! Don't even get me started on trying to get on a bus if a lot of people were waiting too. And it's not that I wasn't used to London, I lived in Leyton and Tooting before that.
Where do you need to commute to? Although it's still a bit grotty South Norwood is becoming more expensive and transport links are good. Norbury isn't too bad either. Or you could look a bit further out towards South Croydon?0 -
Catford is fine but a bit dull and down at heel. Hither Green is much nicer with a real community particularly over towards Lee and Manor House gardens, artists open houses at Christmas, a lovely library etc. The prices will be the similar, the transport will be the same but you get a much nicer environment. Alternatively the bit between Lewisham and Blackheath is good. Much cheaper because you dont actually live in Blackheath but with all the nice 'London Villiage' stuff close by.0

Come to Yorkshire! We'll look after you. Moving out of London was the best decision we ever made. As long as you have work the quality of life is a lot better. London is great to visit, and you can still do that.0 -

While the Lewisham/Blackheath border area may be cheaper than Blackheath village itself, it's still a fair bit more expensive than Catford, Hither Green, Lee etc. Think about it - it's within walking distance of both Blackheath for the open space, nice cafes etc and Lewisham for the (zone 2) transport links and useful shops.Let's settle this like gentlemen: armed with heavy sticks
On a rotating plate, with spikes like Flash Gordon
And you're Peter Duncan; I gave you fair warning0 -
We moved out of Catford last year having lived in Catford/Sydenham all our lives.
Generally a lot of people in the area think that the part of Catford bordering Sydenham/Forest Hill is a nicer area to live in, we lived close to Bellingham Park and never had a problem. Our neighbours greeted us with the words "welcome to the posh part of Catford" when we moved in lol. Also having a quick nosy on Rightmove there seem to be a fair few properties quite a bit cheaper than the one you are looking at.
Having said that we moved down to Kent, it was nerve wracking to say the least having lived in the area since we were born. It was the best thing we ever did. I can't believe how different life is down here compared to London, and wouldn't move back for anything (not that we could afford to now anyway).

It is indeed, its where I live now, having lived in both Hither Green and Lee. The OP said she hadn't considered Hither Green and In my opinion its nicer than Catford and worth exploring. There are also better priced properties in the outer reaches of what estate agents call Blackheath borders. 50's houses built on bomb sites that can be made over. There is a small ex council estate on the Cator Estate which was next to the Ferrier but now is sandwiched between the new Kidbrooke Villiage and the Cator. I see folks moving in an doing up the large and very underpriced houses there.
Not disagreeing at all but encouraging a bit more looking around rather than settling in Catford0
