If the flats are build to anywhere near the building regs in terms of soundproofing then flushing should not be an issue.

He really bangs on the ceiling when you flush the loo?! I'd be tempted to buy some hobnail boots and do a little jig whenever he happens on he ceiling.

I've lived in flats with shared internal soil pipes and have never heard of this complaint you pay to live there do it how you want. If he/she complains suggest he pays your bills then you'll live by his rules.

He sounds like a totally unreasonable neighbour (and I say that as a light sleeper who has suffered from noisy neighbours!)
I am sometimes disturbed by by neighbours running their dishwasher or washing machine late at night, but I've always assumed that was just part of living in a terraced house. It would never occur to me to complain!

  • He doesn't bang on the ceiling every night, but he says it wakes him up every night. I haven't let him bully me into going to bed at the same time as him, but I'm currently not flushing as I don't want to disturb him if I can- I just wanted to know what was normal for if I do move. I didn't want to move as it will cost a lot and it can feel like he's bullied me out; but I think there would be a problem whoever was living in these flats and I have anxiety/panic attacks which has been made much worse by worrying about if he is going to bang again etc. Thanks for the comments

Next time he bangs, flush every 5 minutes for the rest of the night.:)

I've honestly never given this any thought (although I never use the toilet in the night...maybe that's why)...in any case, if I use the toilet, I flush it...and that's that.
  • Very inconsiderate.
Use the window instead or drill a hole down into his flat and use that:rotfl:

I would say to him (because I don't like being bullied by people like him) that if he feels that your tiptoeing to the bathroom and daring to flush your own toilet during the night (god forbid ! Next you might start treating the place like it's your own home...) that you would like someone from the noise dept at Environmental Health to visit so they can record the exact noise made and take appropriate measures (e.g inform the building owner that their property has been built by muppets and noise-reducing flooring needs installing, that Mr grumpy-git needs another hobby and to get a grip, or that you need a night-time catheter that has a tube that extends right down into the drain below the property...)

To be honest this neighbour should think about moving to a bungalow, on a private island.....
There is no shame in not knowing; the shame lies in not finding out.
