flushing the toilet at night (when you live above another flat)

If you lived in a block of flats above another flat, would you flush the loo at night, or leave it unflushed so as to not disturb neighbours below?

I have lived in 3 blocks of flats over the past 13 years, the first 2 everyone flushed the loo whenever, but my current one is above someone who complains about any noise during the night and so I haven't been flushing the toilet. I would personally prefer to flush as it seems cleaner, less smelly and stops the loo getting blocked (if it has been used several times with no flush, but that's too much info!)

So as I'm looking to move flats I wanted to find out what most people did. Thanks in advance for your opinions :)

I try not to disturb my neighbours at night but not flushing the loo in the night would be a step too far for me.

At night I go by if it's yellow let it mellow, if it's brown flush it down. That's how I was always told in order not to disurb any one else.

If the problem is that the cistern fill's particularly noisy, you can quieten them down.

I currently live in a flat & never hear the people above me flushing their loo at night. I've owned flats previously & have never been disturbed by noise from neighbours flushing their toilets either.

I think if you live in a solidly built block rather than a modern block or a flat conversion then the toilet flushing should not be a problem to other neighbours.

If you're worried about not flushing the loo to cause any disturbance, then how about leaving a bucket or jug or a bowl of water nearby & once you've used the toilet, just pour some clean water down the toilet pan?
The bigger the bargain, the better I feel.

I should mention that there's only one of me, don't confuse me with others of the same name.

    Flush it .
  • Thanks for the replies so far. Where I currently live the problem is more than just flushing the toilet, my neighbour sometimes bangs on the ceiling if I just walk to the bathroom at night and as he can hear my footsteps (I'm not stomping, not wearing shoes, and the floor is carpeted!). I have tried pouring water down from a bucket/jug instead but he still bangs at this. But I wanted to check how "normal" it was to flush the loo at night, and how much is just due to the problems with my current flat.

Thank you Cattie for your suggestions- the block I'm currently in was built 30-40 years ago. I am definitely going to look for a newer or more solidly built block as I don't want these problems again.

  • I am always considerate to my neighbours re the level of noise I make.

With that, then I would flush the loo when I needed to (even in the middle of the night) because it wouldn't be my fault that the flats have been built so badly that a neighbour could hear me doing this and/or just walking in a normal way across a carpeted floor. Walking around normally and flushing the loo are normal sounds and not "noise" iyswim.

Having said that, if I'd found my home had been built so badly as that, then I would be investigating to see whether I could possibly afford to move on, as places really SHOULD be built better than that and I would worry in case of I got a noisy lout of a neighbour creating genuine noise and disturbing me at some point.

    Exactly that.
Its a waste of water to do anything different, never mind the neighbours.

Sounds like a totally unreasonable neighbour. It's his/her problem not yours. I wouldn't dream of not flushing my loo, yuk .
