flushing the toilet at night (when you live above another flat)

When I lived in a flat I always flushed it. Although my toilet was over their kitchen!0

I've had my fair share of noisy neighbours but expecting someone not to flush the toilet at night is unreasonable. Likewise complaining about a neighbour walking around their home is unreasonable unless they wear clogs or tap shoes.
Your neighbour is most likely disturbing other neighbours with his banging like one of my neighbours does when she jumps up and down on her floor when one of the other neighbours plays his guitar (he isn't very good but doesn't play late or at unsociable hours). She makes way more noise than he does.
Your neighbour needs to get a grip and buy some ear plugs or move to a building with better soundproofing because it seems like it is pretty poor in your block of flats.0 -

Where I currently live the problem is more than just flushing the toilet, my neighbour sometimes bangs on the ceiling if I just walk to the bathroom at night and as he can hear my footsteps (I'm not stomping, not wearing shoes, and the floor is carpeted!). I have tried pouring water down from a bucket/jug instead but he still bangs at this. But I wanted to check how "normal" it was to flush the loo at night, and how much is just due to the problems with my current flat.
Thank you Cattie for your suggestions- the block I'm currently in was built 30-40 years ago. I am definitely going to look for a newer or more solidly built block as I don't want these problems again.
I would be tempted to complain about the noise from my neighbour banging on the ceiling... If someone is that sensitive to quiet noises, then they are not suited to living in a flat.
I try not to make too much noise at night. I use headphones to listen to music if I'm up late studying for example. But I would definitely flush my toilet whenever I used it!Sealed Pot Challenge #239

Thanks again for the replies. I do try and save water but sometimes you need to flush the loo! I think my neighbour is being unreasonable (he also previously tried to tell me what time to go to bed and get up so I didn't disturb him if it was later/earlier than him) but the flats also have very bad soundproofing, or something wrong with the floor. I've had no help from the council's anti social behaviour team, my landlord or his landlord about him banging on the ceiling (they have asked him not to but he still does it). So I've had enough of feeling like I'm walking on eggshells (whilst I'm being as quiet as I can be and not flushing the loo) and shall look for somewhere else. But it is good to know that most people who have replied would flush the loo too as someone said to me people didn't in blocks of flats which I hadn't come across before. I'd just flush. Your neighbour sounds like a crotchety old man, likely to just complain about your very existence.
Not flushing is too much for me. Here's a little bit of info for you: when you smell something it means that small particles of it are in your nose.

Don't be bullied by inconsiderate neighbour. If they really feel you are making noise then they should complaint to council who will fit a recorder in their flat and will write to you if council picks up any real noise.Happiness is buying an item and then not checking its price after a month to discover it was reduced further.0
