There's nothing to do free in most parts of the country .... and if there is, then doing it once is more than enough.
And, once they charge, they charge fortunes - because they can - because there are enough people with enough money who are prepared to pay it.0 -

Quite often NT membership works out good value ( its often on special offer of some sort) . In the days I could run I used to use a few routes on nt grounds, and later when I was wlking but couldn't walk on slippy / muddy ground a big nt garden open to dogs in off season worked brilliantly for me, because there were pathed routes of various lengths.
I like repeat visits to places, you see different things and things look different in different lights at different times of year.
A few nt places also have different exhibitions throughout the year.
There is no doubt though, London is the best place I've lived for free stuff to do.0 -
One of the advantages of being near-but-not-in London is you can get to lots of free places with a relatively low cost train ticket, while not living in London
I've got a national trust membership. Although I am not retirement age, I always take a packed lunch and never actually eat at the expensive restaurants.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”

I think I have a problem.
I am now the owner of two white currant plants.
And I went for my evening peruse of the garden despite it raining.0 -
Can you eat white currants? No reliance should be placed on the above! Absolutely none, do you hear?0

NT works well if you've the right ones near you. The cost of driving to them can mean it's not worthwhile if you're trying to have cheap/free days out.
My second nearest is a beach and it's a long way away, a 50 mile round trip, involving either a ferry trip (and queueing for that), or a loooong drive round.
There is one castle, but how often can you go to the same castle.... so it'd be cheaper to just pay the non-member price and go once. That's a 50 mile round trip too.0 -
Yes, you can eat white currents.
Edit: But you probably shouldn't. You should drink them. As wine.“The ideas of debtor and creditor as to what constitutes a good time never coincide.”
