PasturesNew wrote: »I spoke to Bank1 and had a discussion about CHAPS and it was awful/complex .... stupid system. The next day I had another discussion and it seems that by simple telephone banking I can transfer £99k over the phone. Only difference is that a telephone transfer will only guarantee "to be there by close of business the following day". This would mean it'd need transferring quite a few days in advance as it can't turn up on completion day, needs to be cleared by the day before ....
As for Bank2, I'll pop in and see them at the branch, I expect to probably do some similar transfer there at the branch/over the counter .... or will have to do a CHAPS for that one, but it's not a problem as they have a branch here.
Bank1 CHAPS involved: Phone up super early in the morning, then drive out to somewhere that has a fax facility and send a fax to them with the same information. Bit bizarre really. This could be done by going to the branch, which is a 10 mile round trip and it's in a part of the next town I am not familiar with and don't wish to be familiar with.
Bank2 CHAPS is an unknown (at present) method, but at least the branch is pleasant - and is across the road from the solicitor, so I can let them know I've done the transfer right after.
You should be able to fax from your computer, if you have the necessary cable. You just choose "fax" as the name of the printer and click "print".
There must also be web pages that offer the ability to load a document and send as a fax.
Failing that I have a fax machine here if you want to send over a document, I could print it out and fax it.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. Oh, and on the way back home I did most of my weekly shopping at the petrol station round the corner (not as bad as it sounds, has a 'posh' supermarket bit). Also not as extravagant as it sounds as I caught the second reductions0

Faxes = they wanted your autograph, I'd guess.0

CHAPS: Phone up ..... then send a fax.
Faster Payments: Phone up.
The only difference is the guarantee of when the money will get there. Time the call right and the Faster Payments even has a chance of being there within 2 hours, they guarantee "by end of next working day", whereas CHAPS means "today".0 -
I've got a combined printer/copier/scanner/fax. Think it was about £50.I'm a Forum Ambassador on the housing, mortgages & student money saving boards. What did you get? How much?
2x moussaka (enough for 3 meals), a couple of packs of garlicky chicken (will cook up tomorrow for salads/ with pasta etc, enough for 4 meals), some Indian snacks, a Thai veg curry, and some scotch eggs (they were an extravagance, but I do like scotch eggs). Just need a but of extra veg / salad to add to what is already lurking in the fridge.
£12.
Need to do some planning tomorrow and work out what might need to go in the freezer.0 -

True. I don't make the rules
I had a temp job in which my main duties involved sending and receiving faxes. That was what convinced me I wanted a job (any job) in science!0 -
It's a pity that our raspberry crop is always so large when I don't like them much.
Heretic!
I adore raspberries - I'll have your share. Yum yum yum.....Aaaah, Isaac's a cutie:o.
Sorry I haven't been about much - been away for work and I was 50 last Wednesday, so I have been out a fair bit - OK a lot. Work is busy and one of my customers is actually paying me to act as a consultant on one of the more technical aspects of our work ( I know I say haulage, but it's a tad more complicated but I can't say on a public forum).
Is LJ in domesticated bliss?
Has PN moved yet?
Happy birthday, Bugs! Hope you had a lovely day.
LJ and Chewy have completed and moved in, PN has exchanged, but not yet completed. So it's been all go on the NP house-moving front....much enquiry having been made concerning a gentleman, who had quitted a company where Johnson was, and no information being obtained; at last Johnson observed, that 'he did not care to speak ill of any man behind his back, but he believed the gentleman was an attorney'.0 -

PasturesNew wrote: »I've looked into sending faxes in the past and you need(ed) to buy into a service .... I'd not want to faff about trying to find out how, then trying to set it up..... and I think the process involved some form of ID.... so a fax service (Post Office or bank branch) that involved being ID'd too.
It'd be quicker to do a 10 mile round trip, park, walk 1/4 of a mile and go into the branch itself ....
All in all, adding in the obscure/unusual concept of faxing into the equation put me off the idea.
"People" .... don't have faxes to hand ... they're so old fashioned. I've not even seen one in a workplace for over 10 years! And they were always a nightmare to use, with problems, jams, dodgy lines, etc.
They still have them in educational establishments as unlike some businesses they're around for the longterm and still have them from years ago. They're just like big electronic wall-mounted phones though
I can remember when faxes were becoming common and people moaning that they were too modern and not legally important enough to be able to take over from the more expensive telex. If anyone remembers that!PasturesNew wrote: »You did well... I think we all love a scotch egg. I'd make some myself but it's so offputting turning on a whole oven for one small item. I'd bake them, not deep fry (I don't deep fry anything, petrified of oil/fire)
