We're eating wild strawberries and a few merge juneberries ( its a very little tree) and courgettes and lettuce, spinach and beet tops and baby chard.

Our lettuce is running to seed. Its a cut and come agains mix with that really spicey lead in it and its too hot for me. :( we're also eating marigolds and nasturtiums aplenty.

The chickens ate the big strawberries, not checked the courgettes and the chicks are eating the currants as they ripen. ;).

We have one crap apple on the new crap apple tree. A few cookers. Measly few gages again. Not checked the plums yet, will check this weekend maybe. Only violets has a fig crop, but it looks a good one. The others are a bit sulky tbh. I'll be annoyed if the little leaf one at least doesn't set any fruit for next year, its vey lazy.

We were promised rain today. It hasn't rained yet. I would like some rain please as my water butts are nearly empty. Thanks in advance :)

Edit: Was just about to mute the tv as I thought I'd left a tap open...

What's the difference between crab apples and normal apples? I have some kind of apple-growing tree...

I also have a burgundy-leaved tree which is producing something that looks a lot like cherries (I'd thought it was in the back neighbour's garden, but had a bit of a better look last night and it's mine), and something which is making what look like they'll be plums.

    .

    They're a different species.

Crab apples are traditionally used because of their high pectin content in jelly's and jams, are used in crab apple ciders, but if you were to bite into one you'd find it's about the most sour fruit you can imagine.

Generally, Crab apples are tiny compared to normal apples. They're also gorgeous in the spring, and highly decorative during autumn.

    Birds.
You can cut that bit off and eat the rest; that's what we used to do.

They are smaller and more fragrant and sometimes almost purely ornamental so small are the fruits and glorious the blossom.

Some have burgundy leaves actually. Ours should but its not tall enough to get enough sun yet so its a bit green. Ours is a Harry baker ( red fruits...could this be what you have?) which I chose as its a great compromise , or rather hardly a compromise between ornamental and useful. The traditional useful one is john downy and if I had gone for a purely ornamental I think it would have been profusion or prairie fire.

The fruits make amazing apple jelly. More fragranced than apple, brighter. I don't know what we will do with our one fruit. :rotfl:

That's really positive news, Lydia, it must be a bit of a relief.

I've just been told that as I've been resting all day, I should some housework. For the record, this is not the best way to convince me to do something for you, especially when the only time I sat down (apart from driving) was at lunchtime and just now when I ate dinner.

We have one with burgundy leaves...but just the one...so NDG told me the story of how a mummy tree and a daddy tree are needed to make apples.

maintenance money going forwards didn't need to be tied up and could just be handed over to me because I wasn't the sort of mother to abandon the children and abscond with the cash. :)

Everything feels as though progress is finally being made. :)

That is such good news . Peace at last on this issue at least.

I like the endorsement form the Barrister. Could this be a new NP trait? Where we ask the question "are you the sort to abscond with your offspring's financial security " and we could drum those who affirm they are, off the NP thread.
